Chelsea make Liam Rosenior sack decision with date pencilled in to review performance

Chelsea have no plans to axe Liam Rosenior this summer - even if he misses out on the Champions League come the end of the season.
Rosenior was hired in January to replace Enzo Maresca, who was shown the door on New Year's Day. He took charge of a team sitting in eighth. His remit was to keep the Blues in the Champions League, which realistically meant they had to, at a minimum, finish in fifth.
As things stand they are sixth with Liverpool a point ahead of them in fifth. Aston Villa sit in fourth with Manchester United in third. Rosenior will be allowed to continue his work for the foreseeable and the only scenario where that changes is if Chelsea implode in the final weeks of the season.
Chelsea's hierarchy don't envisage that happening and believe they cannot properly judge the former Strasbourg boss until he's been able to work across a period of 70 games - he's currently had 17 at the helm. As a result the Telegraph reports that the club do not plan to formally review Rosenior’s performance before the summer of 2027.
Chelsea are confident that their new manager is open to feedback and constructive criticism. They remain confident that he can quickly learn from mistakes with the club, under their current ownership, already on their fifth permanent boss since 2022.
Rosenior recently defended his record by claiming: “From my time with the group, we're third in the league. Sometimes it feels like that's not the case. The last league game we played, we won 4-1 at Aston Villa."
Since that statement victory the Blues have endured several setbacks and reality checks. They were hammered in their last 16 Champions League clash with PSG , which saw them exit the competition 8-2 on aggregate. At the weekend they were then beaten 3-0 at Everton , which saw them miss out on the chance to go fifth as some of Rosenior's decisions are put under the microscope.

Already he has flip flopped with his goalkeepers. Robert Sanchez has not totally convinced since moving to the club and he was dropped as their No 1 for the game in Paris. His replacement, Filip Jorgensen, made an error that led directly to a goal, and so Sanchez returned.
The former Brighton shotstopper then made a blunder that allowed Everton to score at the weekend. Rosenior has been accused of creating uncertainty in that position - which was already up for grabs. Chelsea see this summer as vital for recruitment and a new goalkeeper could yet be signed whilst Mike Penders is likely to return from his loan at Strasbourg to compete for the No 1 spot.
