Martin Tyler completely understands why Sky Sports moved on from him with Peter Drury after the 2022-23 season. The veteran broadcaster stepped down from his role following 33 years as the voice of their football coverage.

Tyler, 80, did not retire from commentary and continues to cover matches for other channels, predominantly for Premier League Productions and TNT Sports. He also started a podcast, 'The Joy of Football ', with Neil Barnett two years ago, and it has over 100 episodes.

He also harbours no bitterness towards his former employers. Tyler regards himself as blessed to have worked with some wonderful people.

Speaking to The Sun , he said: "I completely understand things move on. I feel blessed to have worked with some wonderful people, enjoyed great moments with outstanding co-commentators like Andy Gray, Alan Smith, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher ."

Tyler also explained: "My contract at Sky ran out, and they chose not to renew it – that's entirely their right. I'd had 30-odd years there, absolutely wonderful, wouldn't say a bad word about them at all.

"There was a suggestion that I was retiring, which is not true at all. I'm still loving doing commentary, and if I can continue to impart my love for the game through commentary, then I'll do it until I fall off the gantry."

Tyler opened up about having a voice problem towards the end of his spell on In The Mixer , brought to you by Sky Bet. He said: "It was complicated because I had a voice problem for the first time in my life around that time.

"I knew I was already going, and then suddenly this. Nobody really knows medically what it was, but it was weird because I could shout, but I couldn't conduct a conversation.

"I was not going to the coffee shop, not answering the phone unless it was somebody who knew that. So at the time it sort of came to an end at Sky, I was needing some medical expertise.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

"I had a couple of operations on my vocal cords, and it was a bit worrying at the time. It took about eight weeks to be able to get going again, not a very nice eight weeks."

Tyler also believes the profession has changed a lot. He said: "When you get two voices now, three voices sometimes and somebody else down on the touch line, there's a lot of radio-ness about the television commentary, whereas before it was maybe just a little more laid back.
