Manchester United will turn their attentions to further summer signings and several player sales after agreeing a £35m deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson.

Ederson will become United’s first signing since Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach last month .

The 26-year-old is expected to officially join Manchester United in July before the club return to pre-season, having put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Old Trafford .

Ederson, who has three caps for Brazil, has spent the last four seasons at Atalanta, making 180 appearances for the Serie A side.

United targeted Ederson as a direct replacement for Casemiro , who is set to leave the club at the end of the month when his contract expires.

But Ederson will be just the first of up to three central midfielders that Manchester United plan to sign this summer, with Premier League players Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali all possible additions.

United are planning a significant midfield revamp not only due to Casemiro’s departure but also as Manuel Ugarte will ‘likely’ be moved on, according to Sky Sports .

Ugarte has underwhelmed at Old Trafford since his £50m move from PSG in 2024 , finding himself on the periphery under Ruben Amorim and now Carrick.

United are aware it might not be easy to shift Ugarte due to his high wages and could sanction a loan exit if they cannot raise a fee for a player set to feature at the upcoming World Cup for Uruguay.

Ugarte is not the only player Manchester United are hoping to move on, with Old Trafford bosses also looking for solutions for Joshua Zirkzee and Andre Onana.

BBC Sport say Onana has been told he is not part of the club’s plans going forward, having spent this season on loan at Trabzonspor.

Onana was Amorim’s first-choice goalkeeper last season but quickly lost his place in the team after United signed Senne Lammens .

The Cameroon international will return to Old Trafford in the coming weeks and is even set for a pay-rise from Carrick’s side qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

That factor means Onana will also be difficult to move on and the 30-year-old is believed to be keen to stay put and fight Lammens for a place in the team.

Manchester United have already decided to part ways with the £47.5m signing, however, as they view Lammens as their long-term shot-stopper and are also able to call upon loanee Radek Vitek.

Vitek, who is yet to feature for the Red Devils, impressed on loan at Championship side Bristol City , winning all of the club’s player of the year prizes.

United will try to cash in on Zirkzee following his second disappointing season at the Theatre of Dreams in which he scored just two goals.

The 25-year-old, who cost £36.5m, attracted interest from several Serie A clubs during the January transfer window despite his ongoing struggles.

While Manchester United look to sell some unwanted players and sign at least one more midfielder, Carrick is also hoping to bolster his options in attack and defence.

A new forward will likely arrive to support the promising but inexperienced Benjamin Sesko while a left-back will be targeted to provide cover and competition for Luke Shaw .

At the end of the season, Carrick described the upcoming transfer market as the ‘most important transfer window of all time’ for Manchester United.

‘I think the beauty of the next transfer window for everybody, it’s always the biggest thing in the world, and the most important transfer window of all time for every club I think,’ he said.

‘That’s just the nature of how it’s been created, to be honest. And I think, again, as a football club, you want to keep moving forward. We certainly do as a football club, want to keep moving forward.

‘So, I think it’s acknowledged we’re at this stage and the dynamics and the balance of the direction we’re at, where we’ve ended up getting to and finishing in the league.

‘And there’s obviously work to do. I know it’s quite obvious, there’s certain players leaving, that there’s a bit of work to do.

‘It’s not any more important, this one, than the last one, or it’s what’s ahead of us as a football club to try and make the most of.’

Carrick guided Manchester United to a more than respectable third-place finish in the Premier League , just seven points behind rivals Manchester City and 11 points above reigning champions Liverpool.
