Burnley vs West Ham United Premier League preview, team news and prediction

Separated by just one spot in the Premier League standings, 19th-placed Burnley host 18th-placed West Ham United at Turf Moor on Saturday in a crucial gameweek 25 relegation showdown. Both teams are fighting for survival, with Burnley sitting 11 points adrift of safety and West Ham six points behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest after 24 matches.
Burnley appeared to be turning a corner with a four-match unbeaten run in all competitions, but that momentum was halted by a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland on Monday—their first Premier League loss in four games. Although Scott Parker’s side failed to claim a league win during that stretch, hard-fought draws against Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur were seen as valuable points gained. However, the heavy loss at the Stadium of Light brought them back down to earth.
That defeat marked Burnley’s 15th league loss of the season—second only to bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers (18)—leaving the Clarets 11 points from safety. Without a win in their last 15 top-flight matches, Burnley are just two games away from equalling their club record of 17 consecutive winless league games, a mark set back in the 1889-90 season.
Burnley’s recent record against West Ham offers little encouragement, as they are winless in their last eight meetings with the Hammers. Fans arriving at Turf Moor will be hoping to avoid edging closer to that unwanted 137-year-old record.
West Ham, meanwhile, come into this fixture with their own troubles, having squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Chelsea in gameweek 24. That collapse continued a worrying trend for the Hammers, who have now dropped 18 points from winning positions this season, with the Chelsea defeat marking the seventh time they’ve failed to win after taking the lead.
Nuno Espirito Santo will be looking to inspire a response from his side, aiming to rediscover the form that saw them claim back-to-back victories in January over Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland, following a similar run in November against Newcastle United and Burnley.
Historically, West Ham have enjoyed a strong record against Burnley, winning 10 of their 19 Premier League encounters—a 53% win rate, surpassed only by their results against Fulham (57%) and Watford (56%) in the competition. However, their away form has been poor, with just one win in their last 10 on the road and only two victories in their last 12 matches overall, casting doubt on their ability to secure three points this weekend.
Having already suffered defeats at Sunderland and Leeds this season, West Ham will be eager to avoid losing to all three promoted clubs for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign as they look to close the six-point gap to safety in the relegation battle.
