Lionesses edge past Iceland in 500th game
Alessia Russo scored the only goal of the game as England narrowly defeated Iceland in the Lionesses' 500th game.
England came into this game on a high after defeating World Cup winners Spain last time out and that confidence was evident in the first half.
The visitors were the better of the two teams and took the lead in the 21st minute when Lauren Hemp found Alessia Russo , who managed to turn and fire an effort into the corner.
It looked like England could put the game to bed with the score just 1-0 at the break Iceland where much improved in the second half.
Indeed, with just over an hour gone Glódís Viggósdóttir headed wide from a corner as Iceland began to grow into the match.
With just over 10 minutes left to play, Iceland hit the post. Sveindís Jónsdóttir did well to get past Lucy Bronze and cut the ball back for Sandra Jessen whose effort bounced back off the post.
Short afterwards, England failed to deal with a long throw requiring Hannah Hampton to make a save to keep Alexandra Jóhannsdóttir 's effort out.
Eventually, Sarina Wiegman's team hung on to claim a much-needed victory if England are to finish top of Group A3.
