Jamie Redknapp says dad Harry “went for me” after he made a “cheeky” jibe at mum Sandra. Jamie, 52, became one of the most expensive footballers in English football when he signed for Liverpool for £350,000 in 1991.
He was only 17 at the time and had played just 13 matches for his dad Harry’s AFC Bournemouth side. Jamie went on to win 17 caps for England while also playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton.
His career coincided with the 1992 launch of the Premier League , for which he was a poster boy alongside Manchester United ’s Ryan Giggs and Lee Sharpe. But Jamie says it was Harry and Sandra who always “brought me back down to Earth”.
Speaking to AFC Bournemouth’s The Wave, he says he was “never allowed” to get arrogant. It led to one moment where he ended up on the receiving end of Harry’s anger after firing a comment towards Sandra.
Jamie said: “I was so fortunate that I had great parents and a brother as well, an older brother, who used to come and watch me play. I was never allowed, or I wouldn’t allow myself, to get big headed because you can easily go that way and you’re thinking, ‘I’m playing for Liverpool’, and you’ve got the sponsorships and everything is going great and you’re getting around the England squad, but they were my mates, and I needed to be brought back down to Earth.

“I always remember one conversation with my dad, we went on holiday once, and I can’t remember where we were, Majorca or somewhere, and I wasn’t a cheeky boy, even now at 52 my mum has never heard me swear in front of her, and I wouldn’t do it, my respect for my parents has always been very high.
“But I might have said something a bit cheeky to my mum, I was 17, 18 at the time, and my dad absolutely went for me. We never argued [me and] my dad, I don’t think we’ve ever argued in our life, and he went, ‘Who do you think you are? You talk to your mum like that, you’ve done nothing in this game’.
“I went, ‘Oh I needed that’. That afternoon I remember going out, I went for a run and again, I went, ‘I’ll show you’. Sometimes you need that.”

Former football manager Harry and Sandra’s relationship won over the hearts of the nation when he appeared on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2018. The 79-year-old has now returned to the hit TV series for the all-star I’m A Celebrity…South Africa.
Harry however almost missed his first stint on the show after Sandra contracted sepsis . Harry said at the time: "What made it worse was just before I went on the show, Sandra had sepsis and was really ill, so I wasn’t going to go, you know. But then she improved, so I said any problems and I'm out of there straight away.
"Anyway, when they called me down to the Bush Telegraph of whatever they called it, they said, 'We want you out, you’ve got to leave the camp immediately.’
"I said, 'Why, what’s happened?' They said, 'We can’t tell you, you’ve got to go out, you’ve got to leave now'. So when I saw Sandra, it made it ten times worse as I thought there was a problem.
"I was terrified I was going to lose her and I nearly didn't get on the plane. But she wasn't having it – she wanted me to go. I'll never forget the moment she came into camp to see me. It was the first time she'd seen me cry."
I'm a Celebrity... South Africa continues at 9pm on ITV One
