Marcus Tavernier is among the potential players Manchester United may target this summer in their search for a new left winger, it has been claimed.

The Red Devils are light on out-and-out wide players with Ruben Amorim preferring to play with wing-backs. But with United improving significantly in a different shape after ditching Amorim's preferred back three system under Michael Carrick , the club are expected to recruit for a wide attacker in the summer.

The Mail report that Tavernier, 26, is among the players who have been put together as part of a shortlist for United by scouts, joining the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Yan Diomande.

Tavernier has established himself as a key player for Bournemouth in recent years and has six goals and four assists to his name this term, including a strike in the spectacular 4-4 draw between the Cherries and United at Old Trafford back in December. His form has also attracted interest from elsewhere in the Premier League with Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest also admirers.

And while it is claimed Bournemouth may be open to a sale in order to raise funds for incomings of their own, the fact that Tavernier is contracted until 2029 means it would likely cost in excess of £40million to prise him away from the south coast outfit.

As well as a left-sided attacker, United are also in the market for two new central midfielders this summer, while they could also look to strengthen at left-back and in central defence. They are expected to monitor all their potential targets until the end of the season where they will then decide their next steps, including the appointment of a new head coach.

Despite losing his first game since succeeding Amorim in January against Newcastle in midweek, Carrick has significantly enhanced his chances of landing the job on a full-time basis after putting them in contention for a top-four finish.

He admitted he was planning ahead in case he does get the nod full-time earlier this week when he was asked if he felt the job was now his to lose. "It's going to be every week this, isn't it?" Carrick said.

"There's no getting away from the situation, of course. There's not really an awful lot I can say about it to be honest. I love being here. I love doing what I'm doing. I've said it from the start, I'm not making any decisions for short-term or quick fixes.

"I think it's the responsibility, however long I'm here, to make decisions that are the best for the football club in the long term. Of course, winning games helps and the boys are doing great with that. We'll just have to see where it ends up."
