Wales will look to take a significant step towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup when they host Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Cardiff City Stadium in Thursday night’s playoff semi-final. The winner of this one-off tie will advance to face either Italy or Northern Ireland at home in next Tuesday’s playoff final, with a spot at this summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico at stake.

Wales are aiming to reach the World Cup finals for only the third time in their history, and for the second consecutive tournament, having featured at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they exited at the group stage. Craig Bellamy’s side narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for 2026, finishing second in Group J, just two points behind group winners Belgium, despite earning 16 points from eight matches.

The Dragons come into Thursday’s clash on the back of an emphatic 7-1 victory over North Macedonia in their final group game last November. Harry Wilson netted a hat-trick to inspire Wales to their biggest win in 47 years and secure home advantage for the playoffs.

Wales will be buoyed by their strong record in Cardiff, having won five of their last six competitive home fixtures. They also triumphed at home against both Austria and Ukraine in the playoffs to reach the 2022 World Cup. Currently ranked 31st in the FIFA World Rankings, Wales will be wary of Bosnia, as they have failed to win any of their four previous meetings, and have failed to score in three of those encounters.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, meanwhile, suffered heartbreak in their bid for automatic qualification, conceding a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Group H winners Austria in their final group match last November.

Sergej Barbarez’s team finished second in their group with 17 points from eight games—only Italy (18 points in Group I) earned more points without winning their group. Nonetheless, Bosnia now have another opportunity to reach the World Cup finals for the first time since their debut as an independent nation at the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

Ranked 71st by FIFA, Bosnia will be eager to break their playoff jinx, having failed to win in seven previous playoff matches (three draws, four losses) across four campaigns since 2010 (one World Cup and four European Championships).

However, the Dragons can take encouragement from their four-match unbeaten run away from home in all competitions, as well as their record in Wales, where they have recorded one win and two draws from three visits, including a 2-0 friendly victory in August 2012.

Wales will be without Ben Davies, Chris Mepham, Kieffer Moore, and Connor Roberts due to injury, while Aaron Ramsey is not included, having not played since September 2025. Danny Ward, Rabbi Matondo, and Rhys Norrington Davies return to the squad for the first time this season and are available for selection.

Craig Bellamy is expected to field his strongest side, with Premier League players Harry Wilson, Joe Rodon, Neco Williams, Brennan Johnson, and David Brooks likely to feature.

For Bosnia, Dennis Hadzikadunic is out injured, but Osman Hadzikic and Nidal Celik have been called up. Midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic remains available despite recent controversy. Veteran striker Edin Dzeko, Bosnia’s record scorer and most-capped player, is set to captain the team.
