VAR chaos and late drama as Leverkusen and Bayern play out fiery draw

Chaos, controversy and relentless VAR drama defined the clash between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Bayern Munich as the Bundesliga heavyweights battled to a 1–1 draw. Early brilliance from Aleix García was eventually cancelled out by Luis Díaz, while two red cards and multiple overturned goals ensured a frantic encounter at the BayArena!

Here is our detailed match report for this thrilling Bundesliga encounter:

Bayer 04 Leverkusen made the perfect start against FC Bayern Munich , taking the lead with their very first shot on target.

With just five minutes on the clock, Aleix García danced past two defenders inside the penalty area before firing a deflected effort goalwards. The ball looped over goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, who made his first appearance for Bayern since 2024, and dropped into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Leverkusen looked sharp and energetic from the start, clearly determined to exploit Bayern’s potentially fragile motivation after their emphatic 6-1 win over Atalanta earlier in the week.

Bayern, by contrast, appeared sluggish. Early fouls disrupted their rhythm, and the Bavarians found themselves trailing earlier than at any point so far this season.

It took Bayern almost 20 minutes to properly grow into the match. When they did, they briefly thought they had equalised: former Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah bundled the ball into the net following a free kick. However, the effort was ruled out after the ball struck his elbow before crossing the line.

The visitors’ brief resurgence quickly faded as Leverkusen regained control. In the 32nd minute, talented youngster Montrell Culbreath nearly doubled the lead with a superb long-range effort that curled just wide of the top corner.

Things then went from bad to worse for Bayern shortly before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Nicolas Jackson was shown a red card after VAR intervention. The striker arrived far too late in a challenge on Martin Terrier, catching his opponent on the ankle with a high, outstretched leg. Bayern were suddenly down to ten men.

After the break, substitute Ibrahim Maza nearly produced a moment of audacity, attempting to surprise Ulreich with a shot from the halfway line. The effort narrowly missed the target.

Leverkusen then had two golden opportunities to extend their lead. Both Patrik Schick and Malik Tillman found themselves one-on-one with Ulreich, but the Bayern goalkeeper managed to keep his side in the game on both occasions.

In the 60th minute, Bayern introduced Harry Kane - and the England captain made an instant impact. Just 47 seconds after coming on, Kane appeared to have equalised. After pressing Janis Blaswich, the ball fell to Luis Díaz, who dispossessed Jarell Quansah and squared it to Kane for a simple finish.

However, the celebrations were short-lived. To the frustration of Bayern fans, the goal was ruled out after officials determined that the ball had struck Kane’s elbow in the build-up.

Then it finally happened: a horrendous pass from Andrich went to Olise, who played Díaz through on goal and the Colombian did not miss this one - 1-1 after 69 minutes!

Tensions were running high all throughout the second half - FCB coach Kompany even received a yellow card after telling the referee to look at the VAR once more to take away another Bayern goal!

Luis Díaz received a second yellow card for a dive in the 84th minute and had to leave the pitch. The last time Bayern got two red cards in one game was 25 years ago - back then, Stefan Effenberg and Bixente Lizarazu had to come off! … and the game ended in a 1-1 draw (against Borussia Dortmund). Could this fate repeat itself?

Bayer Leverkusen actually managed to get another lead! Jonas Hofmann's deflected shot went (again) over Ulreich's head and into the goal. But the story of this game continued: VAR called, a player was offside, the goal was taken back. Still 1-1 after 94 minutes of mayhem.

After all the VAR drama, Leverkusen and Bayern shared the points and the final result stayed at 1-1.
