Premier League icon Hal Robson-Kanu reckons he can help save the NHS £23billion with a homemade remedy. The 36-year-old - a star of Wales' run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 - has pursued an unusual career path since retiring from football.

The former West Brom and Reading striker has established Turmeric Co., which manufactures products designed to prevent and manage conditions such as inflammation, chronic pain and associated health issues.

As part of his ambitious long-term goals for the enterprise, Robson-Kanu hopes to see his turmeric-based shots prescribed by the NHS as part of a transition towards preventative care.

He told Georgie Ainslie on the Performance People podcast: "Our vision is to eventually have [our products] prescribed by the NHS. That would democratise health to the level where £23billion of cost on the NHS, which is driven by inflammation, chronic pain and ailments every year, is completely eradicated because of preventative measures."

The venture stems from his own injury struggles, including two ACL ruptures, which nearly ended his career during his teenage years. A homemade concoction prepared by his father proved crucial to his recovery and inspired Turmeric Co.

He said: "My career was written off. My father created a blend which became a homemade recipe and remedy that allowed me to recover from chronic inflammation and pain within six weeks of taking it.

"I was able to get back playing, training and was ultimately able to then go on and have the career that I had in professional football completely pain-free. But I should never have had that career."

Robson-Kanu and his dad felt they needed to try something different after his body reacted badly to anti-inflammatories and painkillers. He explained: "We kind of felt obliged to bring this product to market.

"What we had at home had not only changed my life and changed my family's life at this point, it was a homemade remedy."

Robson-Kanu felt so passionately about the product that he decided to retire early. He said: "I was 31 years of age, so relatively young. It was the best I physically felt in my career. It was very much a decision to focus on the business."

With business booming, it has proved a wise decision. He said: "Having people come up to you on the street and saying, 'I'm a subscriber of your product, thank you so much for making it,' it is so much more humbling and fulfilling and rewarding than even scoring a goal."

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
