The unthinkable is looking more and more likely for Tottenham Hotspur after they lost a crucial relegation six-pointer at home to Nottingham Forest to leave them in a perilous position near the foot of the Premier League table.
Spurs finished 17th last term in a campaign that was salvaged by the Europa League triumph overseen by Ange Postecoglou. But their domestic woes have continued this season, first under Thomas Frank and now his successor, Idor Tugor.
They headed into Sunday's crunch clash against Nottingham Forest just a point above Vitor Pereira's men.
But goals from Igor Jesus, Morgan Gibbs-White - a player who looked destined to join the club from Forest back in the summer - and Taiwo Awoniyi pushed Tottenham closer to the drop.
Spurs remain just a point above the drop zone after West Ham also lost away at Aston Villa .
Jesus gave the visitors a priceless breakthrough just before half-time, planting an inch-perfect header beyond Guglielmo Vicario from a corner.
Gibbs-White, who was the subject of offers from Tottenham last summer before signing a new contract with Forest, struck a second before Awoniyi added a third minutes from time to give the club a seismic boost in their bid to evade the drop.

Tottenham registered just three shots on target in this pivotal shootout and such a meek defeat at home will pile even more pressure on the beleaguered Tudor.
The Croatian, drafted in until the end of the season, has failed to win any of his five Premier League games at the helm and there have already been suggestions that Spurs could make another managerial change in a bid to alter their fortunes.
Pereira, on the other hand, is up and running in the Premier League as Forest boss, collecting his first league triumph at Tottenham's expense. They now sit two points above Spurs, though very much still in the relegation mire.
With just seven games remaining, time is running out for Tottenham to lift themselves away from danger. But right now it's hard to see where the next win is coming from.
