Leeds United, Man City transfer update will interest Sheffield Wednesday
The promising Watford loanee will likely go elsewhere this summer
Sheffield Wednesday ’s past interest in a highly-rated Manchester City youngster could become relevant again this summer.
The latest update on his future, however, suggests the Owls may face stiff competition.
The teenage defender has already attracted attention across Europe after impressing during his first taste of senior football, and several clubs are now positioning themselves to secure his services for the next stage of his development.
For Wednesday , who explored a potential deal earlier this year, the situation has taken on a different complexion.

According to Alan Nixon via Patreon , Manchester City are fielding significant interest in defender Stephen Mfuni ahead of the next campaign.
The 18-year-old defender, currently on loan at Watford , has caught the eye during his first spell away from the Etihad setup.
Nixon reports that a number of clubs are already attempting to secure the youngster on loan again next season, with City expected to send him out to a higher level of competition.
European sides are also monitoring the situation closely, with interest from clubs in Germany and Spain who see the England youth international as a player capable of accelerating his development through regular first-team football.
However, Nixon adds that interest is not limited to the continent. Premier League clubs are also keeping tabs on Mfuni, with Leeds United among those tracking his progress alongside several sides hoping to win promotion to the top flight.
The attention reflects a rapid rise for the defender, who has been part of Manchester City’s academy since under-nine level and has steadily progressed through their youth ranks.
A left-footed defender capable of operating both at centre back and left back, Mfuni first gained wider recognition when he scored for City in their FA Youth Cup final victory over Leeds United in 2024.
He was later included in The Guardian’s “Next Generation” list, highlighting the most promising young talents at Premier League clubs.
Earlier this year he made his senior debut for Pep Guardiola’s side, coming on as a half-time substitute in their 10-1 FA Cup victory over Exeter City , before joining Watford on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Sheffield Wednesday were among the clubs exploring the possibility of bringing Mfuni to Hillsborough during the January transfer window.
At the time, the Owls were keen to strengthen on the left side of their defence following Harry Amass’ return to Manchester United, and Mfuni was identified as a potential solution.
City’s openness to sending him out on loan made a deal theoretically possible, while Wednesday had already begun building a working relationship with the Premier League champions.
That connection saw Jaden Heskey join the club earlier in the window, and there were hopes that positive feedback from previous loans could strengthen the Owls ’ position in future negotiations.
Circumstances, however, have shifted dramatically.
With Wednesday’s relegation now confirmed and the club facing a looming 15-point deduction heading into next season, the chances of attracting a player of Mfuni’s profile appear increasingly slim.
Manchester City are widely expected to place the defender in an environment that provides both a higher standard of competition and a stable platform for development.
Given the level of interest now emerging from across Europe and the Premier League, a move to League One would represent a significant step down in that pathway.
That said, Wednesday may still take encouragement from the working relationship they have begun to build with the Manchester giants.
The loan arrivals of Heskey and winger Joel Ndala during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign offered further evidence that the Etihad hierarchy are willing to trust the South Yorkshire club with the development of their young players.
If that relationship continues to strengthen, Wednesday will hope Manchester City’s loan managers remain open to sending prospects to Hillsborough in the future - even if Mfuni himself now looks destined to progress elsewhere.
