Sunderland complete Tyne-Wear derby double over Newcastle as Brian Brobbey hits last-gasp winner

Sunderland completed a memorable Tyne-Wear derby double over Newcastle thanks to Brian Brobbey's last-gasp winner. Forward Brobbey struck in the 90th minute to complete the Black Cats' comeback.

Anthony Gordon had fired Newcastle ahead in the first half after a defensive mix-up from a Sunderland goal kick as the hosts dominated before the break.

But Sunderland were more impressive in the second period and deserved their equaliser from Chemsdine Talbi.

It looked as though the game would finish 1-1 but Brobbey had other ideas, turning home Enzo Le Fee's cross via a deflection from Aaron Ramsdale .

Gordon's strike was a horrible moment for Sunderland stalwart Luke O'Nein, who has played a bit-part role this season having starred for the Black Cats in League One and the Championship.

He received a short pass from back-up goalkeeper Melker Elborg, deputising for the injured Robin Roefs, and attempted to play out from the back.

But his pass went straight to the feet of Nick Woltemade who fed Gordon. The England international rode O'Nein's challenge and struck firmly into the bottom corner to give Newcastle the lead.

It could have got worse for Sunderland just before the break as Sven Botman hit the post. Lewis Hall delivered a pinpoint cross from the left and Botman met it well but could only head on to the woodwork.

But Sunderland hit back after the break. A corner was swung in from the right and Ramsdale was unconvincing in trying to punch it away. His parry only reached Trai Hume who hooked it back into the six-yard box.

Brobbey attempted to chest it over the line but his effort was blocked by Dan Burn. The ball fell to Talbi who drilled home from close range to restore parity.

Newcastle thought they had gone back in front after Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but the goal was ruled out due to Jacob Murphy standing in front of Ellborg in an offside position.

But it was to be Sunderland who took the bragging rights with Brobbey turning home from close range at the same end as the visiting supporters were housed high up at St James' Park.

In a worrying moment, the game was earlier temporarily halted due to an allegation of discriminatory abuse aimed at Sunderland's Lutscharel Geertruida.

A raucous pre-match atmosphere outside St James' Park was marred by violent clashes between the two sets of supporters.

Eyewitnesses claimed that a small number of travelling Sunderland fans broke away from the police escort into the stadium and into a huge group of home fans

Once inside the stadium, Newcastle fans revealed a mosaic poking fun at their fiercest rivals, with the message reading: "Welcome to the region's capital. You've been gone for so long!"

But Sunderland supporters had the last laugh after witnessing a historic league double.

It's a result that sees the Black Cats rise to 11th, leapfrogging their closest neighbours in 12th.
