'Sir Alex Ferguson only let one person mock him at Man Utd – he was teased over his trousers'

Sir Alex Ferguson ruled Manchester United with an iron fist - but there was one person who could slip past that steely exterior. According to Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand , that individual was Ferguson's favourite dinner lady, Carol.

At the height of his powers, Ferguson was one of the most intimidating figures in football. His ruthless managerial style fostered an atmosphere of total authority, one that kept players and staff respectfully deferential.

But Carol didn't stand on ceremony and once even mocked Ferguson's choice of trousers. "I remember once he walked in wearing a smart pair of cream chinos as I was talking to Carol," Ferdinand told the Sun in 2020.

"She stopped our conversation and just said to him 'What are you wearing?!' It made us all laugh."

He added: "Carol was a very funny lady. I loved speaking to her and having a laugh over a cup of tea at the training ground. She would treat everybody the same, academy players, Premier League champions or Sir Alex Ferguson , one of the biggest names in the history of football."

Carol is a long-serving dinner lady at United's Carrington training base. Ferdinand, who spent a decade at Old Trafford, reconnected with Carol in 2020 as part of a BT +1 initiative that aimed to tackle loneliness during the Christmas period.

He said at the time: "During the 12 years I spent at Manchester United I saw Carol almost every day at the training ground. She was part of the fabric of the club and always there through the good and bad times.

"I saw her more than I would see some members of my family. But then after I retired, I didn’t see her for a couple of years... so the chance to reconnect with her was amazing. We've built a genuine friendship over the years. When you meet a person like Carol, you don't forget them."

While Ferguson happily let Carol take the mickey out of him, he had zero tolerance for any hint of dissent from his players.

Over the course of his 26-year reign at United, Ferguson clashed with several keys figures - including Roy Keane , David Beckham , Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy - conflicts that, more often than not, ended with the player's departure.

But it was arguably this atmosphere of unwavering discipline and authority that not only propelled Manchester United to the summit of English and European football, but kept them there for more than two decades.

Under Ferguson, the club lifted 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues. He built an era of unprecedented domestic dominance that redefined sustained success in the modern game - but even the most formidable dynasty had room for the disarming wit of a down-to-earth dinner lady.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
