Silva unhappy with ‘very bad afternoon’ as Fulham exit FA Cup
Marco Silva called Fulham’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton a ‘very bad afternoon’ after his side crashed out of the FA Cup .
Fulham missed the chance to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals after losing to the Championship side at Craven Cottage. Ross Stewart scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time, after Joachim Andersen’s foul on Finn Azaz .
Fulham’s late loss end’s the club’s hopes of a maiden major trophy this season, as a rotated team failed to take their chances. The West Londoners had 68% of the possession and 24 efforts on goal without scoring.
Asked whether the mass changes has contributed to the club’s cup exit, Silva told BBC Sport: “I understand that, it’s more than that. It was a bad afternoon for us and for our fans.
“We need to look deeper because I’m not pleased at all what has happened this afternoon. This one is more than a defeat – if it’s because of the changes then fine, I get it – but [Ryan] Sessegnon and [Timothy] Castagne have played this season against top Premier League sides, Oscar Bobb and Samuel Chukwueze are at the level. We have to look deeper. I understand that I get the blame for making the changes.
“It’s our obligation (to pick ourselves up for the run-in), we have to understand it was a very, very bad afternoon. We know anything can happen on football but it’s more than that. We have to look deeper because it was not good enough and that starts with me looking at myself.”
