Roland-Garros odds after Carlos Alcaraz announces withdrawal from Grand Slam

Carlos Alcaraz has announced he will miss out on Roland-Garros this year due to an injury on his right wrist. He was last in action at the Barcelona Open after beating Finland's Otto Virtanen

The reigning French Open champion has endured injury issues around this stage of the season before. He missed last year’s Madrid Open with a right adductor problem and arrived at the 2024 event still managing a muscle injury in his right forearm.

Grand Slam absences, though, have been rare for the Spaniard. Since the start of 2021 he has missed only one major — the 2023 Australian Open, which he withdrew from with a right hamstring injury. Over that same period he has won seven Grand Slam titles, and in January the 22-year-old became the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam by lifting the Australian Open trophy.

In a statement on his social media channels, Alcaraz wrote: "After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, waiting to assess the evolution to decide when we will return to the court. It is a difficult moment for me, but I am sure that we will come out stronger from here"

The announcement leaves a huge gap in the market between the current favourite Jannick Sinner and second favourite Alexander Zverev. Sinner, who lost to Alcaraaz last year in five-set thriller in Paris, is the odds-on favourite to achieve his maiden clay court Grand Slam while German Zverev is a distant 10/1 - for reference, Alcaraz was 15/8 before his withdrawal.

Jannik Sinner also has a major incentive in Paris as the French Open is the only Slam missing from his set, and he was denied last year in a classic final against Alcaraz despite holding three championship points. Alcaraz’s absence would also open the door for the chasing pack to end the pair’s dominance at the top of the sport as the two have shared the last nine Grand Slam titles between them.

Top of that list is world No. 4 Novak Djokovic, who is chasing more history at 38. One more major would give him a record 25 singles Grand Slam titles, moving him past Margaret Court, and would also make him the oldest men’s Grand Slam champion of the Open Era.

Djokovic has built his schedule around peaking at the biggest events, rarely playing outside Grand Slams and Masters 1000 tournaments. Even with limited match play, he remains dangerous — he reached the Australian Open final this year by beating Sinner in five sets, and in Paris may only have to get past one of the sport’s two dominant forces at most.
