The Bernabeu will play host to a blockbuster Champions League showdown on Wednesday night, as Real Madrid and Manchester City meet in the first leg of their last-16 tie. This clash marks a historic milestone, becoming the first fixture ever to be played in the knockout stages for five consecutive Champions League seasons.

Real Madrid, aiming for a record-extending 16th European crown, had to navigate the knockout round playoffs after finishing ninth in the League Phase—just one place and one point behind Man City, having lost three of their final five matches. After a 4-2 defeat to Benfica on matchday eight, Alvaro Arbeloa’s men bounced back by overcoming the Portuguese side 3-1 on aggregate, securing their spot in the last 16 for a 23rd straight season.

Domestically, Madrid have experienced mixed fortunes, suffering a surprise 1-0 loss to Getafe before snatching a dramatic 2-1 win at Celta Vigo thanks to a 95th-minute goal from captain Federico Valverde. Back at the Bernabeu, Los Blancos have won four of their five Champions League home games this season—scoring 12 times—though their only defeat came against Man City in a 2-1 loss on matchday five. While Madrid have lost their last four UEFA matches against English clubs, they remain formidable at home, with just three defeats in their last 25 Champions League games at the Bernabeu. They’ve also advanced from 13 of their last 15 last-16 ties, winning the first leg in 10 of their last 12.

Manchester City, meanwhile, bounced back from last season’s playoff exit to Real Madrid by finishing the League Phase in style, collecting 16 points from eight games to qualify automatically for the last 16. Their 2-1 win at the Bernabeu—only their second in eight visits—was among five group victories, alongside wins over Napoli, Villarreal, Borussia Dortmund, and Galatasaray.

Since their last European outing, Pep Guardiola’s men have won seven and drawn two of their nine domestic matches. Despite a recent 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest that left them seven points behind Arsenal in the Premier League, City responded with a 3-1 FA Cup win over Newcastle. Guardiola prepares for his 190th Champions League match as a manager, equalling Sir Alex Ferguson’s record.

City’s away form in Europe has been mixed, with just two wins in their last eight Champions League games on the road. They have also lost seven of their last ten two-legged ties against Spanish sides, but recent results are more encouraging: City have lost only three of their last 18 UEFA matches against Spanish opposition, and have already won both their away games in Spain this season—against Real Madrid and Villarreal.

Real Madrid are set to be without key duo Kylian Mbappe (knee) and Jude Bellingham (hamstring) for Wednesday’s match, joining Rodrygo (ACL), Eder Militao (hamstring), Dani Ceballos, and Alvaro Carreras (both calf) on the sidelines. Eduardo Camavinga (dental) and David Alaba (calf) are both doubtful and will be assessed before kickoff. Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono return from domestic bans but are unlikely to start. If fit, Camavinga should partner Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield, with Arda Guler also an option centrally or on the right. Vinicius Junior is expected to start on the left of a front three, with either Gonzalo Garcia or Brahim Diaz leading the attack.

For Man City, Josko Gvardiol (tibial fracture) and Mateo Kovacic (ankle/heel) are the only absentees. Pep Guardiola is likely to restore his strongest lineup after heavy rotation against Newcastle. Erling Haaland, rested last match, should return up front—he has 56 goals in 56 Champions League games and 10 in his last 10 against Spanish teams, including a penalty at the Bernabeu in December. Matheus Nunes is set to continue at right-back, alongside Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, and Rayan Ait-Nouri in defense. Rodri, O’Reilly, and captain Bernardo Silva are expected to form the midfield trio. Guardiola faces a selection dilemma for the final attacking spot alongside Haaland and Antoine Semenyo, with Omar Marmoush, Savinho, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, and Jeremy Doku all in contention.
