The Premier League are expected to amend the new spending rules that will come into play for the 2026/27 season in a move which will give clubs more flexibility in the transfer market. The squad cost ratio (SCR) rules were approved last November and will be introduced this summer.

Clubs will be restricted to spending 85% of their revenue on transfers, player wages and agent fees, though complicated factors means clubs could go as high as 115%. A breach will result in a fine and a six-point deduction if a club's spending reaches 115% of revenue.

In a shareholders meeting on Thursday, clubs agreed on an amendment which will favour clubs who follow the rules.

The new terms rule that if a club does not spend their 85% allowance for two seasons, they will be allowed to roll over up to 10% in the third year and subsequently avoid a fine for a breach.

According to The Guardian , Brighton & Hove Albion proposed the tweak during a shareholders meeting before Christmas .

The report states that none of 20 current top-flight teams opposed the proposal and it is expected to be formally put into place before the end of the season.

The tweak in the ruling comes just over a week since UEFA officials raised concerns about the impact of the new financial rules on the rest of Europe.

The governing body's current SCR limit is 70%, which participating teams in the Champions League , Europa League and Conference League must follow.

Other leagues have more stringent rules than the Premier League and fears that clubs on the continent may be forced to take additional risks to retain players have emerged.

The BBC have claimed that the Premier League rejects those claims, insisting the new rules ensure competitive balance.

Despite UEFA's concerns, the Premier League suffered a tough time in the Champions League this week. Of the six clubs in the Champions League, only Arsenal and Liverpool progressed to the quarter-final.

Newcastle United were beaten 7-2 in Barcelona last night while Tottenham suffered defeat to Atletico Madrid. Chelsea also fell to a heavy defeat, losing 8-2 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester City were outclassed by Real Madrid .
