Newcastle United are looking at a major regeneration project as part of a plan to build a new stadium next to St James’ Park, according to the Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards . Newcastle will soon decide whether to rebuild SJP or move to a new stadium, which could become third-largest in England behind Wembley and Old Trafford. The Magpies have been considering building a new homeground for a while and a major decision is expected before the end of 2026.

However, a new stadium will also come with so many projects alongside it as Newcastle will look to reconstruct the surrounding area with new retail, leisure and business buildings. A modernisation of the entire city could be on the cards as it means a new housing project will also come in view. The transportation system and infrastructure will also be looked into as major changes will be needed if a new stadium is built, and Newcastle have held talks with the government about securing public funding for financing of the regeneration of the new ground’s surrounding area.

Funds for constructing a new stadium will not come from the public but from the Toons’ majority owners – Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Funds would also come from other investors and lenders as Newcastle expected the building of a new ground to cost over £1 billion. It could take around three years for the project to be finished once planning permission is obtained, and fans will be excited to see how things go as the Magpies look to establish themselves as one of the biggest clubs in Europe going forward.

St James’ Park is currently the 9th largest football stadium in England with a seating capacity of 52,264, and Newcastle want a new home with a capacity that could rise as high as 68,000 on part of Leazes Park.
