Melvine Malard: Man United Women star reveals ambitious dream
Manchester United Women will take on Chelsea in the final of the League Cup next Sunday.
The Red Devils have never appeared in the final before and will be aiming to win just their second trophy in their history.
Marc Skinner’s side have had numerous top performers this season, but Frenchwoman Melvine Malard has been near the top of the list.
Malard has scored eight goals in 31 appearances this season in all competitions.
Ahead of the massive game next weekend, the 25-year-old spoke to the BBC .
The attacker was asked what she brings to the side and she claimed, “I think I change the energy here. I like to enjoy football. I like to play free. Football is work but firstly it is the passion and the fans. I think they understand my energy and my vibes.”
She added, “I’m a very happy person and positive. When you’re with me, you’re not bored!”
Malard was spotted on the remote island of Réunion by Lyon and was brought into the first team by manager Sonia Bompastor, who is now managing at Chelsea.
Commenting on the experience, Malard stated, “she tells me, ‘Mel, I like you, come to Lyon’. I had two months to think but I said yes right away because it was a big opportunity in my life.”
She admitted the transition to a completely different footballing world was difficult at only 14 years old, but her love of the sport got her through it.
Malard spent six seasons at Lyon before moving to United on loan in 2023. She has since made the move permanent and could not be happier to be in Manchester.
She exuded, “every time I pass Old Trafford, it’s a dream for me. The people are so nice when I play football, singing my name at the stadium. The club is very big, has a lot of history and I enjoy it a lot here.”
Speaking on the final next Sunday and a chance to win a trophy, she said, “I’m excited, it’s good for us and this club deserve that. I’m also excited to play against my [former] coach. If we win, we put the name again in history and that is what we want.”
Finally, she claimed, “I’m confident because I believe in this team – I believe in this club. We are here to win everything we can.”
