Michael Carrick has ignited a revival at Manchester United , breathing new life into the squad and restoring a sense of purpose around the club. Few have embodied this resurgence more than Kobbie Mainoo , who has emerged from the fringes to reassert himself as a pivotal figure in the squad.

Since stepping in as interim head coach after Ruben Amorim's departure in January, Carrick has overseen a remarkable upturn in fortunes at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have claimed four wins from their last five matches, including statement victories over rivals Manchester City and Arsenal .

That impressive run has propelled United firmly into the race for a top-four finish. Carrick has drawn widespread acclaim not only for his astute tactical adjustments, but also for the authority and clarity he has brought to a squad previously weighed down by inconsistency, fragile confidence and uncertainty over the future.

Mainoo, who had seemed destined to leave United after being frozen out by Amorim, has arguably been the greatest beneficiary of Carrick's appointment. Having failed to start a single Premier League match under the Portuguese coach this season, the England international has since played every available minute under Carrick, delivering a string of assured and influential performances.

Mainoo's fall from favour was all the more surprising given his rapid rise. After emerging from United's academy in 2023 as one of English football's most exciting young prospects, he went on to cement himself as a regular not just in United's first team, but in the senior Three Lions setup too.

But following Amorim's succession of Erik ten Hag in 2024, opportunities began drying up. With both his club standing and international momentum under threat, Mainoo explored loan moves away from Old Trafford at the end of the last summer window and again in January, but neither materialised.

In the end, circumstances shifted in his favour. Amorim's departure opened the door, and Carrick moved swiftly to restore Mainoo to the heart of the first-team picture, ending months on the periphery and seemingly reigniting a career that had threatened to stall.

Mainoo might be playing regularly again but his long-term future at United remains unresolved. The 20-year-old's Old Trafford contract runs out next year and while with the club hold an option to extend it by a further year, negotiations over an improved deal have so far stalled.

Currently, Mainoo is among United's lowest earners, on wages of around £25,000 per week. He is understood to be seeking a substantial increase - one that would lift him beyond the £150,000-per-week bracket - reflecting both his status as an England international and his importance to the side.

Amidst a series of stringent cost-cutting measures during the early days of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's reign as owner, United had been hesitant to meet Mainoo's demands. However, there are now indications that talks are set to resume , raising the possibility that a compromise could be reached.

Despite the uncertainty that has surrounded him over the past year, United have consistently maintained that they have no desire to sanction a permanent departure and remain keen to secure Mainoo's long-term future with a new contract.

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Mainoo - along with his United team-mates Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw - is "back in the picture" for England selection following their respective revivals under Carrick.

With only a matter of months until Tuchel names his squad for the 2026 World Cup, competition for places is intensifying. Mainoo had been a trusted figure under Gareth Southgate , starting every one of England's knockout matches at Euro 2024 - and his return to form has thrust him firmly back into contention at a pivotal moment.

After being frozen out by Amorim, Mainoo's England career came to a screeching halt. He hasn't played for his country since 2024 and looked certain to miss out on a place at the World Cup this summer. But with his club career now back on track, his international career may follow suit.

"It is great that [Mainoo] is back on the pitch. He is such a huge talent," Tuchel said last week while attending the Nations League draw in Brussels.
