MEN: Man Utd starlet to ‘miss the rest of the season’ through injury as two Reds withdraw from int’l duty

Manchester United have some updates on the injury front ahead of the late-March international break.

First and foremost, Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston has confirmed that young forward Bendito Mantato is set to miss ‘the rest of the season’ after sustaining an ankle injury while in action for the Under-21s.

The issue left Mantato wearing a protective boot, with his campaign now ‘considered to be over’.

It comes as an untimely setback for the 18-year-old, who made his senior debut in a 15-minute cameo against Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 30. He has also been an unused substitute for three matches, all of which came under Ruben Amorim.

Elsewhere, both Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have withdrawn from international duty with Cameroon and Slovenia, respectively.

The former’s decision is precautionary, while Sesko has reportedly been playing through a ‘knock’ in recent outings. The pair are, however, expected to be fit and ready to face Leeds United on Monday, April 13.

Although Michael Carrick will be desperate for all of his players to avoid injury over the break and return ready to navigate the top-four run-in, it might have actually done some Reds a favour, given how little action they’ve had this season.

United’s lack of European and cup games means the players are often waiting at least a full week between matches, which may be doing more harm than good when it comes to maintaining form.

Sesko, for example, may have benefited from adding to his tremendous goalscoring run on the international stage.

On the other hand, Mbeumo is awaiting his first goal contribution in four outings, and his first goal in six matches.
