Man United manager Carrick casts doubt on Casemiro extension

Michael Carrick has cast doubt on a contract extension for Casemiro at Manchester United despite the midfielder’s crucial role in the club’s good form.

Casemiro announced in January that he will be leaving the club when his contract expires in the summer. The 34-year-old’s deal runs out at the end of the season and both parties have agreed to part ways.

However, the Brazilian has been an integral part of the club’s climb into the Champions League places.

He scored his seventh goal of the Premier League campaign during the 3-1 win over top-five rivals Aston Villa on Sunday and was serenaded with chants of ‘one more year, one more year, Casemiro’ by the home crowd at full-time.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Carrick was asked whether there was a chance of a U-turn on the midfielder’s future.

“I think, in some ways, it’s difficult to say, I think when something is decided, in some ways, the fact that it’s decided makes things a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation really.

“I think the impact he’s had has been terrific, certainly since I’ve been here and working with him, and his influence in the team and big moments in goals. And I think it was a nice moment at the end there with the supporters, and having that connection and the respect. That was a nice moment and I think he’ll enjoy that.”
