Marc Guehi insists Manchester City have shown they are ready to “step up” at the right time and win more trophies.

Guehi says the Carabao Cup gave City’s whole squad extra belief and even more determination to win more silverware as they chase a Treble of trophies this season.

City have got title rivals Arsenal in their sights ahead of next Sunday’s winner-takes-all showdown at the Etihad with Pep Guardiola ’s men determined to hunt down the leaders. It is clear that City have the experience and know-how of winning titles and they have closed the gap to just six points - with a game in hand - on Arsenal.

Incredibly, City could now overtake Arsenal at the top if they win their next two games against the Gunners and then the re-arranged fixture against Burnley . Guehi insists that is all about “arriving” at the right time - and they look to have timed their run to perfection again.

Guehi said: “In these moments it’s about stepping up, the players stepping up, the team stepping up and I said it last week, it’s about arriving at the right moment.

“I hope we’re arriving. The trophy definitely gave us a lot of confidence. It doesn’t matter what trophy it is, it’s a trophy and it helps the football club so everyone is just focused on the next day, the next game and just try and be consistent as possible.

“Always, it always gives you belief and it does help everyone. We hope we can win more, that’s the aim. That’s the target.”

Guehi - who joined City from Crystal Palace in a bargain £30m deal in January - has been a transformative for Guardiola’s men because he has brought a calmness to their defence. He was not eligible for the Carabao Cup final but he still felt the confidence gained from beating Arsenal.

City did brilliant business with Antoine Semenyo also signing for a combined fee which was less than £100m and they are hitting form to make Arsenal look nervous and fearful of being overtaken on the final lap for a third time in four seasons.

Arsenal blew it against Bournemouth while City won a tricky game at Chelsea to set up next Sunday’s showdown.

Guehi insisted it was not about Arsenal slipping up or even that showdown next Sunday - but it is just about making sure they focus on themselves.

Guehi said: “Like I said, the most important is controlling what we can control. We can’t control what Arsenal did. We did our job and got the three points.

“I just want to play every game, it doesn’t matter when, where or what type of game. I’m just glad to be at this football club and to be given the opportunity to do so.

“I hope we can make a statement but it’s important we keep feet on the ground, keep taking each game as it comes and see what happens.”

City did look a bit edgy themselves in the first half against Chelsea but then showed their quality too blitz their way to victory in the second half with Guehi also on target.

Guehi enjoyed the goal but was respectful to the club where he started as a kid and graduated from the Chelsea academy.

He added: “I think it’s natural to have nerves, every single player, every single game but it’s how you embrace them, how you fight against them, whichever way you look at it but I’m grateful that every single player stepped up and did what they had to.

“The win helps and controlling the controllable because you can only do what you can control and that’s what we were about and making sure we got the three points.

“It’s nice to score. My main job is to defend but it’s nice to help the team in a different way as well.

“If anything, I’m more grateful, it’s a bit weird , I came from Chelsea and the academy and I wouldn’t be here without the coaches in the academy, the staff, the players I played with so in any weird way I’m really grateful to them for getting me to this point.”
