Manchester United are on the hunt for a new manager after Ruben Amorim was sacked. Amorim oversaw the worst Premier League finish in United's Premier League history, and his side were beaten in the Europa League final by Tottenham Hotspur last season.
And in a statement released on Monday morning, the Old Trafford club confirmed that the Portuguese, who took charge in November 2024, had left his role with immediate effect . It was also confirmed in the statement that Darren Fletcher will take charge of Wednesday’s Premier League game against Burnley .
After the game against the Clarets, the Reds take a break from the Premier League when they welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford in the FA Cup on Sunday. United then face Manchester City at Old Trafford six days later before traveling to the capital to take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, January 25.
The Reds then kick-off February with a home game against Fulham . Following United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday, Amorim delivered an explosive press conference in which he made a number of remarks.
He insisted he is the manager, not the coach of United, and challenged his sporting director and scouting department “to do their job”. He also hinted he could leave when his current deal runs out in 18 months time - if he wasn't sacked before then.
He said: “Guys, to stop with that — and I noticed that you receive selective information about everything — I came here to be the manager of Manchester United , not to be the coach of Manchester United.
“That is clear. I know that my name is not Tuchel, it’s not Conte, it’s not Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United.
“It’s going to be like this for 18 months, or when the board decides to change. That was my point. I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me.”

Before he added: “I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach.
“I was really clear on that. And that is going to finish in 18 months. And then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach.
“If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticism of everything, we need to change the club.
“Every department, the scouting department, the sports director, needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.”
