Manchester United remain light on options at the back when they take on Aston Villa at Old Trafford this afternoon.
Having formed a rock-solid partnership with Harry Maguire at the heart of defence, Lisandro Martinez has now missed the last three games with a calf problem.
The Argentina international has had some very long spells on the sidelines in his three years in Manchester but Carrick has suggested his issue is not considered a serious one and could be available for next week’s clash with Bournemouth .
Matthijs de Ligt is still to play under Carrick with his last appearance for the club coming at the end of November.
A problematic back injury has derailed the Dutchman’s season with no return date in sight.
Patrick Dorgu meanwhile is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury he suffered in the victory over Arsenal in January. The Dane could be back in the fold in April.
There was better news this week on the fitness of Mason Mount.

The former Chelsea midfielder has managed just one minute of action under Carrick with injury problems returning having managed to stay fit for most of the first-half of the season.
The 27-year-old returned to training this week and could be deemed fit enough to make the bench.
United were rotten against Newcastle in a game that feels like months ago. With the exception of Martinez, they had the players who have been so impressive under Carrick at their disposal that day but a slow start and lack sharpness cost them dearly.
Shaking off any rust after 11 games without a game will be vital.
Carrick could have a big decision to make again in attack – Benjamin Sesko’s superb run of form means he surely starts, meaning one of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo or Amad Diallo drops to the bench.
