Man United Women 2-1 Everton Women: Match Report

Manchester United Women welcomed Everton to the Progress with Unity Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

Everton keeper Courtney Brosnan was first called into action when she stopped Frenchwoman Melvine Malard’s shot from creeping into the bottom corner for the first chance of the game.

Elisabeth Terland was next to try her luck, but her effort flew wide when she probably could have done better. Everton had their first real chance just after the half-hour mark when Zara Kramzar’s strike was very well stopped by Phallon Tullis-Joyce .

United responded right away, and Terland’s shot was saved after Malard’s cutback into the box. The Norwegian grabbed the breakthrough after 38 minutes when her shot was mishit, but it fell kindly for her to take full advantage and slot the Red Devils into the lead.

Head coach Marc Skinner discussed before the game the importance of taking chances, and his team finally responded.

There were no further chances until the half-time whistle blew, with United in a deserved lead.

The second half started with little rush, as neither team really had the ball in particularly dangerous areas in the opening stages.

The home side had a let-off when Zara Kramzar had oceans of space but dwelt on the ball before squaring to Inma Gabarro, but the chance fizzled out.

Gabarro would have the last laugh, though, as the United defence switched off and, in acres of space once more, she headed the Toffees level.

There is something about the United DNA, though, and late drama would ensue.

Frida Rolfo lofted in a corner, and Melvine Malard pounced on the goalline when the ball fell through the arms of Courtney Brosnan to give the home side a late, late winner.

The full-time whistle blew, and United had a 2-1 win in spite of being far from their best.

To make matters even better, Chelsea dropped points in a 1-1 draw with London City Lionesses, and Skinner’s side climbed back up to second place.

United will now ready themselves for the mammoth test against Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening in the Champions League.
