Man City announce John Stones exit as second treble winner departs

John Stones will leave Manchester City at the end of the season when his contract ends, bringing the curtain down on a decade at the Etihad.

The centre-half joined the club in the same summer as Pep Guardiola with the Catalan making him one of his key signings early on. Stones has gone on to make 292 appearances for City, winning the Premier League on six occasions whilst also being integral to the treble success.

Stones' ball-playing ability was crucial in the team's 2023 exploits as they became only the second English team in history to land the treble. He started in the final in Istanbul but will now seek pastures new.

The 31-year-old has also won five domestic cups but has seen his minutes decline this season, owing to new arrivals in the backline. Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov have formed a partnership at the heart of defence and talisman Ruben Dias is still to return.

Stones is the second treble winner who will leave City this summer with Bernardo Silva's departure also confirmed. The latter remains a regular but they will both hope to go out on a high with the Manchester outfit still eyeing a domestic treble.

Bernardo and Stones were part of the team in 2018/19 that won the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup - the first team in English history to do so. City have already claimed the Carabao Cup and can still scoop the other two.
