Madonna responds to Spanish football club asking for their missing shirt

Pop icon Madonna has confirmed she is in possession of a Celta Vigo football shirt she famously wore during a 1990 performance, after the Spanish club launched a public appeal for its return.

The La Liga side’s president, Marian Mourino Terrazo, had earlier this week penned an open letter specifically asking for assistance to trace the football shirt.

In her appeal, she described the sky blue jersey as a "symbol of part of the emotional heritage of our club and what it stands for".

Madonna, 67, whose full name is Madonna Ciccone, responded to the plea on X, stating: "This shirt is hanging in my archives. I am wearing and representing your team in spirit."

The letter from the Galician club, which currently sits sixth in Spain’s top men’s football division, had implored the singer for "your help with something that means a great deal to us".

Terrazo’s appeal referenced the memorable occasion on 29 July 1990, when the global superstar performed live at the club’s Balaidos stadium, donning the team’s distinctive kit.

She added: “This beloved memory still lives among our supporters.

“The photograph of you wearing our shirt has become a myth and is now part of our history which is written often beyond the limits of the football pitch.”

She said this “iconic image has grown to shine differently as years have passed” and added “that is why we hold on to the hope of finding the garment you once wore”.

Prior to Celta’s game against Real Madrid in their Balaidos stadium on Friday evening, the club played footage of the concert, and had a band, dancers and singers appear on the pitch to perform Madonna’s hit song, ‘Like A Prayer’.
