Atalanta and Bayern Munich kick off their Champions League quarter-final bid in Bergamo on Tuesday evening. While Bayern advanced directly to the last 16, Atalanta had to pull off a dramatic comeback against Borussia Dortmund in the playoffs, with Lazar Samardzic’s stoppage-time penalty sending them through.

Atalanta, Italy’s last remaining side in the competition, have a strong European pedigree but have struggled recently, taking just one point from their last two league matches and drawing 2-2 with Lazio in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg. Their form has dipped since their win over Dortmund, and they needed a late double from Gianluca Scamacca to salvage a draw against Udinese over the weekend.

Facing Bayern for the first time, Atalanta will be up against a side in top form. Bayern have won 35 of 40 matches this season, losing only twice, and have swept aside major clubs like PSG and Chelsea in Europe. They have won 10 of their last 12 round-of-16 Champions League ties and are the competition’s top scorers in the knockout stage. Vincent Kompany’s men are chasing a treble, having also reached the DFB-Pokal semi-finals, and warmed up with a 4-1 win over Monchengladbach even without Harry Kane. Tuesday’s clash promises to be Atalanta’s toughest test yet.

Atalanta coach Raffaele Palladino is hopeful that Ederson will be available for Tuesday’s first leg, while captain Marten De Roon is expected to return to the starting lineup after being rested against Udinese. However, the hosts will still be without several key players. Giorgio Scalvini is suspended by UEFA, Giacomo Raspadori has only just resumed training, and creative midfielder Charles De Ketelaere remains sidelined with a knee injury. De Ketelaere was instrumental in the group stage, contributing six goal involvements and creating 20 chances; notably, Atalanta have averaged 0.9 more open-play goals per game when he starts.

Up front, Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Krstovic are competing for the striker role. Scamacca, who scored twice at the weekend, has also found the net in each of his last three Champions League home appearances.

For Bayern, Harry Kane sat out Friday’s match with a minor calf issue, but manager Vincent Kompany expects him to be fit in time for Tuesday. Kane has been directly involved in 33 goals in as many Champions League games for Bayern—more than any other player in Europe since the start of the 2023-24 season. There is more uncertainty over captain Manuel Neuer, who has missed two games and was replaced by Jonas Urbig during the win over Gladbach. Defenders Hiroki Ito and Alphonso Davies remain unavailable.
