With all the money spent in the summer, Liverpool fans were expecting a strong campaign defending the Premier League title along with success in other competitions. However, the Reds have struggled to put together a continuous run of good form and will lose their league trophy by the end of the season.

Arne Slot spent a whopping £446million last year improving his squad, securing the likes of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. Despite massive outlays on transfers, the current Premier League champions' best finish this season will be top five, in the Champions League places.

They exited Europe at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain with a 4-0 loss on aggregate. Crystal Palace beat Liverpool in the Community Shield and the Carabao Cup, while Manchester City thumped the Reds 4-0 to send them crashing out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage.

With certain areas of the team requiring a rebuild and injuries keeping key players out of contention this season, Liverpool will hope that the 2026/27 season is one to remember.

Here, Mirror Football has all the latest on where Liverpool could make room in their squad this summer.

Alisson has been an unlucky loser to injury this season, suffering a concussion and multiple hamstring injuries. This means he has missed 18 games so far. However, the veteran goalkeeper has been an impressive performer for Liverpool and is still a much-loved member of the squad, and is a likely contender to stay despite recent transfer links with Italian outfit Juventus.

Giorgi Mamardashvili has been an excellent deputy for the goalkeeping position, making 16 appearances between the sticks before a knee injury sidelined him towards the end of the season. With Alisson getting on in age at 33, the Georgian is likely to be kept and fashioned into Liverpool's new no. 1.

With two top goalkeepers handling injuries this year, Freddie Woodman stepped up to lead the squad from the back in his first year with the Reds. The 29-year-old joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Preston North End and was thrown in at the deep end following Mamardashvili's injury. He has been an excellent stopgap for the unfortunate injury run and is likely to stay beyond this season as a well-respected backup.

Joe Gomez is another star who has struggled with injury this season, missing eight games so far due to various issues. With a lack of inclusions to the starting XI and his amount of time served at the club, it is likely that the defender is sold to allow for new talent to come in.

Club captain Virgil van Dijk has been a major player, helping shoulder the club's struggles this season. Reports suggest that the Reds are looking for the Dutchman's long-term successor this summer, but it is most likely that he will be kept to help bed in new stars.

Ibrahima Konate is one star continuously linked with a move away from Anfield. He is currently set to become a free agent this summer, although the club is working hard to secure a new contract. Real Madrid have been linked with the defender, although he recently confirmed he is close to signing an extension.

Milos Kerkez is one of Slot's summer signings who has not exactly come in and become an instant success at Liverpool. The left-back has dislodged club icon Andy Robertson from his starting berth but has come under fire for mistakes in previous games. He will be one that the Reds hope to improve in the future.

Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley was impressing for Slot's side before a significant knee injury ruled him out for the season. The 22-year-old should be kept with the potential to become another Anfield hero in the future.

Giovanni Leoni barely began his journey with Liverpool before an ACL injury ended his debut season. He is one player who is sure to stay and hopefully return to the pitch with the same calibre of performance he showed in September.

Vice-captain Andy Robertson confirmed he will depart Liverpool as a free agent this summer after spending almost a decade at Anfield. The Scotland international has been linked with many clubs keen on his signature, including Premier League rivals Tottenham .

Jeremie Frimpong joined Liverpool in the summer and has been a regular face among the starting XI this season. He will aim to continue his quest for silverware in England.

Young defender Calvin Ramsay has only made two appearances this season for Liverpool in cup competitions. He could go out on loan to earn more regular minutes and potentially make an impact in the future.

Defensive midfielder Wataru Endo is facing a race to be fit for Japan's squad at the World Cup but he has left a lot to be desired at Liverpool this term. The 33-year-old has made just 12 appearances so far this season and looks to be another name heading out the door.

Florian Wirtz has endured a tough start to life at Liverpool as he faced major criticism across his debut campaign. The German has failed to reach the dazzling heights expected of him from his days at Bayer Leverkusen but will stay to earn his place under Slot next season.

Shining light Dominik Szoboszlai may have been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid this summer, but Liverpool will be desperate to keep the dynamic playmaker at Anfield. The Hungary international has been exceptional in the middle of the park and is one to build around for the next campaign.

Alexis Mac Allister is another star linked with an Anfield exit this summer. The Argentinian has not reached the heights expected this season and has had to toil with the rest of the Reds. However, there is no concrete talks with other clubs and the 27-year-old is tied to the club through to the summer of 2028.

Talks for Curtis Jones to sign a new contract have reportedly been on hold for months, with the midfielder linked to a number of clubs in a possible summer exit. The 25-year-old has made a whopping 46 appearances so far for Liverpool this season and has been heavily relied upon - but he could be on the move in a matter of weeks.

Ryan Gravenberch signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool earlier this year, keeping him at Anfield until 2032. He is not a likely summer exit following this extension and will be kept to build around alongside Szoboszlai.

Teenage sensation Trey Nyoni made his first-team breakthrough for the Reds this year, making 13 appearances for the senior side across domestic and European competition. The 18-year-old has impressed and may be seen as a future star, with potential summer signings pointing to a loan move to develop his skills.

Stefan Bajcetic has not appeared for Liverpool in two years due to injuries and loan spells elsewhere. With his name barely being mentioned in the club's plans, it is likely that the 21-year-old could either go out on another loan or be sold this summer.

Alexander Isak was Liverpool's statement signing last summer with his deadline-day move for a fee of £125m turning many heads. He will likely remain at the club and hope to have a more encouraging sophomore season, after a broken leg derailed his debut campaign.

Summer signing Hugo Ekitike had been a shining light for Liverpool this year, making 23 goal contributions before a horror injury against PSG . The 23-year-old is set to be out for up to 12 months after suffering an Achilles tear, meaning he will miss part of next season and the upcoming World Cup. The Reds will stand by the heartbroken star as he aims to recover from the major setback.

Mohamed Salah will depart Anfield a hero after a nine-year tenure with the Reds. The Egyptian is a modern-day icon, having won two Premier League titles and the Champions League, and cementing his third place position on the club's all-time top goalscorers list.

Federico Chiesa was Slot's first signing for Liverpool in 2024 and was hailed as a £10m bargain from Juventus . However, the Italy international has fallen out of favour at Anfield and was linked with a move away in January. The 28-year-old is likely to be sold to allow new transfers in this summer.

Cody Gakpo is likely to remain on Liverpool's squad list next season after showcasing his dependability this season. The Dutchman was a rare glimpse of hope in the Reds' defeat to Manchester United at the weekend and could be relied upon across the forward line.
