Leeds United and Manchester United ‘to play’ at Croke Park in Dublin
Leeds United and Manchester United are set to meet in a pre-season friendly at Croke Park in Dublin on Wednesday August 12, becoming the first Premier League clubs to play at the venue.
As first reported by the Irish Independent, the rivals will renew hostilities after last summer’s meeting in Stockholm, with this fixture the first football match at GAA headquarters since Ireland faced France in November 2009.
The GAA, custodians of hurling, camogie and Gaelic football, are selective about Croke Park events. The 82,000-capacity stadium recently staged an NFL game and will accommodate this friendly.
Daniel Farke’s side drew 1-1 with AC Milan at the Aviva Stadium last summer, backed by a sizeable travelling support. With both clubs boasting large Irish followings, a capacity crowd looks likely.
The Dublin date follows Leeds’ USA tour in late July and early August. They face Wrexham in Tampa on July 25, Sunderland in New Jersey on July 30, then Liverpool in Chicago on August 2.
Tickets for the USA tour are on sale now, with Leeds expected to confirm the Dublin fixture in due course.
