Leeds make history at Old Trafford after bold selection pays off

Leeds United ended a 45-year league wait at Old Trafford on Monday night, capping Daniel Farke’s risk-taking approach. Manchester United’s fury at the referee and VAR contrasted with a glowing West Yorkshire mood.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Farke also steered Leeds into their first FA Cup semi-final since 1987, eight days earlier, requiring penalties at West Ham after being two up. He picked boldly despite Anton Stach and Joe Rodon being out, took risks in and out of possession, and was rewarded.

Noah Okafor’s two fine finishes, the second a controlled deflected volley, have already placed him in club folklore.

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United’s standout, pushed to make things happen, grew ever more irate, and was booked for dissent. Michael Carrick had grounds to question decisions, yet United lost because Leeds won the intensity battle, repeatedly forcing errors and carving openings. Half-and-half scarves jarred, and Rio Ferdinand’s red-card rage will only amuse Leeds fans.

Off camera, Ethan Ampadu finished crisply in the warm-up while Jayden Bogle struggled, and a young mascot got high fives from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Brenden Aaronson, James Justin and Joel Piroe. Ampadu, Calvert-Lewin and Okafor applauded the away end before kick-off, and Farke later urged Okafor to think as his side comfortably defended.

With United down to 10, Farke’s frustration with choices was clear. In stoppage time Ampadu told Cunha to get up, and after full-time Tanaka looked to be nursing a knock and did not join Sean Longstaff at the away end.
