The mood at Coventry City is electric, with the Sky Blues teetering on the brink of a fairy tale return to the Premier League . Since joining midway through last season, Frank Lampard has reinvigorated the side, who have been out of the top flight since 2001 and were playing in the fourth tier as recently as 2018.

That said, Lampard and his team will understand that getting to the Premier League is the easy part - it's staying there that presents a far tougher task - one that demands meaningful additions. From the outset, Lampard's arrival came with the assumption he could tap into his strong Chelsea ties to help close the quality gap - much like he did during his time at Derby - and the coming transfer window will truly test how effective that link can be.

It's clear where Coventry need strengthening. Their central defensive pairing, which rotates frequently, could be exposed by the speed of Premier League attackers, while the midfield clearly lacks a dynamic edge following Ben Sheaf's exit.

There are also concerns about attacking flexibility and squad depth, with Haji Wright standing as the only forward with a proven track record in a top European league. With that in mind, here are five Chelsea players Lampard might look to bring in this summer, whether on loan deals or permanently.

With highly regarded Mike Penders set to return to Chelsea this summer after impressing on loan at Strasbourg, Filip Jorgensen's future appears uncertain. The Danish keeper has operated as the Blues' second-choice since his move from Villarreal in 2024, and Penders' return could push him further down the pecking order.

Carl Rushworth has performed reliably in goal for Coventry this season but he is expected to return to Brighton once his loan ends. That would leave Lampard needing a replacement between the sticks. Although Jorgensen has faced criticism - particularly after his display against PSG earlier this month - his core qualities remain evident. His reflexes and composure on the ball suit a high-level system, especially one like Lampard's that emphasises playing out from the back.

Given Chelsea's £20million investment in him, they're unlikely to sanction a cut-price deal. Therefore, a loan switch to Coventry feels like the most realistic scenario, offering him consistent first-team action he has largely been denied over the past two years.

Some Chelsea supporters may baulk at the idea of Josh Acheampong leaving but the young defender clearly needs regular playing time - something a Coventry loan could provide. With Levi Colwill nearing full fitness, Mamadou Sarr recently joining from Strasbourg with an existing relationship with Liam Rosenior and additional defensive signings reportedly being considered, opportunities at Stamford Bridge may be limited in the near term.

Lampard, however, has a proven history of developing young players. During his Chelsea tenure, he gave first-team debuts to Reece James , Mason Mount , Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, Billy Gilmour and Ian Maatsen. Coventry could offer Acheampong a similar environment to grow under a manager willing to place trust in youth.

Capable of playing both at centre-back and right-back, Acheampong blends speed, strength and technical ability - qualities that would strengthen a newly promoted side aiming for stability at the back. While Chelsea may be reluctant to sanction a move, a temporary switch could be the most sensible option if minutes remain scarce for Acheampong in west London.

Following an injury-disrupted debut campaign in London, Dario Essugo now faces a crucial stage in his development where consistent minutes are essential to rebuild form and confidence.

Chelsea still consider him a key backup to Moises Caicedo, but there are concerns that limited appearances after nearly a year without any football could hinder his long-term progress. A loan move could therefore benefit all involved.

Lampard's midfield has often drawn criticism for being overly technical and "soft" in transitional moments, lacking a true ball-winner. Essugo offers the physical presence and defensive bite needed to shield the back line while freeing up more creative players.

Tyrique George made a noticeable impact from the bench last season, contributing important goals - including one against Fulham that reignited Chelsea's push for a top-four spot. However, since joining Everton on loan in January, the 20-year-old has struggled for opportunities.

Under David Moyes , he has started just once and has seen only four minutes of action since mid-February. While it has been a disappointing stint on Merseyside, it could present an opportunity elsewhere, with his transfer value potentially lower than it was a year ago.

Coventry's current wide players lack the explosive one-on-one ability and technical creativity that George naturally brings. Signing him permanently would allow Lampard to shape his long-term attacking plans around a player capable of producing decisive moments.

After a very brief loan spell at Sunderland earlier in the season, Marc Guiu returned to Chelsea to provide cover following Liam Delap's injury. However, since Delap regained fitness, Guiu has struggled for involvement.

The former Barcelona prospect is still only 20 but already has a strong physical presence, making him well-suited for a developmental loan in the Premier League. Lampard's tactical setup relies on forwards who can both lead the attack and link play effectively - qualities Guiu developed at La Masia.

He would also bring a different option compared to players like Wright and Ellis Simms, offering sharper movement in tight areas, relentless pressing and a natural instinct for scoring inside the box.
