John Terry admits he was 'frustrated' to be overlooked when Calum McFarlane was drafted in as Chelsea 's interim head coach earlier in the season and questioned why the club's top brass snubbed him.

Terry , 45, is a Chelsea legend after spending almost 20 years with the club, progressing from the academy ranks to club captain. He made over 700 appearances for the Blues, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League , before leaving in 2017 and currently holds a consultancy role within the club's academy.

Despite his work alongside McFarlane for the Under-21s and Under-18s, Terry was not part of the group that stepped in when Enzo Maresca left the club at the start of January .

McFarlane led the team for a key match against Manchester City and earned plenty of plaudits after drawing the game 1-1. He also took charge of the defeat against Fulham before Liam Rosenior got to work as the Blues' new head coach - but Terry was disappointed that he wasn't involved at all in the interim team.

"[I wasn't] annoyed," Terry told Jimmy Bullard as a guest on his Golf Life YouTube channel .

"Probably more frustrated because I was certainly part of that under-21s group that went over. So even if I didn't take the team. Obviously, Calum took the team and did really well. Got a result out of the game.

"I feel like I should have been part of them. Now, listen. People have got to make decisions. I love it when people make decisions and they go yes or no. And clearly ownership or whoever made those decisions, the sporting directors have gone 'no', not to include me for whatever reason - why, I don't know."

Terry moved into coaching at Aston Villa after briefly playing for the Midlands outfit before retiring and served as Dean Smith's assistant at both Villa Park and again at Leicester .

He was linked with the Oxford United job earlier this season before shutting down such talk and admits as much as he would love to manage Chelsea in the future, it is unlikely he will get to do so without gaining further experience as a manager.

Terry added: "I got linked with the Oxford job recently. Which [there is] no truth in it at all.

"I hadn't spoken to them. Hadn't kind of put myself out there. And I'm not [looking to]. Like I'm in the academy as you know. I'm working with the 18s and the 21s. Love my role there. It's a part-time basis.

"I've always said if Chelsea ever come up [would love to take over] but then, realistically, do I get Chelsea without doing the other bits? Probably not."
