‘His head’s checked out’: Scholes wants to see controversial PL star at OT despite calamitous display vs Utd

Paul Scholes has revealed he’d ‘love’ to see Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero at Manchester United .

He’s certainly not the only one, as Lisandro Martinez has previously poured praise on his Argentine compatriot, hailing him as the best centre-half in the world and his favourite-ever teammate to have played alongside.

United fans mightn’t be too keen on such a move materialising, though, particularly after Romero’s calamitous display at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Inside the opening half-hour of action in M16,  the Spurs skipper was shown a straight red card after lunging into an unbelievably reckless challenge on Casemiro.

As it was his second red of the season, Romero will now miss four matches as opposed to the usual three-game ban.

Yet, there’s no denying that, when he’s able to control his temper, he is one of the most reliable defenders in the game.

Throughout Argentina’s emphatic World Cup-winning campaign in 2022, Romero started six of their seven matches played, including the full 120 minutes of the final.

He has since, when fit, been a mainstay for the world champions – so much so that he used to keep Martinez out of Lionel Scaloni’s side until they partnered one another in the 2024 Copa America, which Argentina also won.

When reflecting on the 27-year-old’s showing against United, Scholes said on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast: “Do you know what? I love him (Romero) . I love watching him play football.

“He’s p*ssed off at Spurs, isn’t he? He doesn’t want to be there. He’s having a go at the crowd, he’s having a go at the board – I think his head has checked out a little bit.

“But I would love him at Manchester United . I just love his character.”
