Fabrizio Romano shares update on Gareth Southgate potentially becoming next Man United boss

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the situation between Manchester United and Gareth Southgate as the club prepares to kick off their search for a new permanent manager.
Having sacked Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, United confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim coach earlier this week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also considered for the temporary position but the club opted to proceed with Carrick, who is poised to be in the dugout for Saturday’s derby meeting with Manchester City.
United carefully assessed the situation and opted for an interim manager, deferring the decision on a permanent appointment until the summer. Some of the names being mentioned include Enzo Maresca, Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi and Southgate.
Since INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe assumed operational control of the club, Southgate has consistently been linked with the United job but he has never secured it.
He has been out of management since stepping down from his role as England boss in July 2024.
Speaking on his YouTube channel , Romano poured cold water on suggestions that Southgate is a top contender for the United hot seat. Romano noted that if United really wanted the 55-year-old coach, they would have made a move for him already.
The Italian journalist said, “Southgate’s name always comes up when there is a Manchester United managerial vacancy.”
“He has an excellent relationship with some people at Manchester United and with figures at INEOS. But my understanding is that if United really wanted Southgate now, they could have taken him.”
“They did not proceed because, at this stage, they have different priorities in their process for appointing a new manager in the summer.”
Romano continued, “For now, Michael Carrick is in charge and United will see how he performs. They will then start a proper process for a new permanent manager.”
“At this moment, there is nothing concrete between Manchester United and Gareth Southgate.”
