The summer transfer window is open and Manchester United can today complete a deal for Brazil midfielder Ederson. The 26-year-old was scheduled to have a medical on Sunday ahead of his proposed move.

Michael Carrick's side are expected to be busy this summer , with departures already confirmed from the squad that secured third place in the 2025/26 Premier League. Casemiro is among three senior players leaving on free transfers when their contracts run out on 30 June, alongside Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho.

But Ederson looks poised to become the first new signing . The Atalanta star will cost an initial £35m, with ESPN suggesting an agreement has been struck to bring him to Old Trafford.

Corriere dello Sport subsequently reported the player was pencilled in for a medical while in the United States for the World Cup 2026 on Sunday and so Ederson's signing can be sealed today , with the window now officially open.

A fresh midfielder was clearly a priority for Carrick from the point Casemiro's summer departure was confirmed. Now, it appears the player serving as understudy to the veteran in Brazil's World Cup squad will become his long-term successor at Old Trafford.

For a period, Atletico Madrid appeared to be frontrunners to secure the Atalanta midfielder. United have gained the upper hand, though, after reviving interest in a player previously linked with the club.

Ederson is anticipated to arrive as one of no fewer than two new central midfielders, strengthening an area where depth proved notably inadequate last term. The 26-year-old will join following a World Cup campaign with Brazil , having received a call-up as cover for the injured Wesley mere days before the tournament commenced.

The sub-£40m outlay for Ederson could assist United in securing funds for their second midfield acquisition. West Ham are reportedly seeking as much as £85m for Portugal international Mateus Fernandes, though that figure could be reduced.

Fernandes proved a rare bright spot for the Hammers during their relegation season as Nuno Espirito Santo's side dropped into the Championship on the campaign's final day. The east London outfit remain optimistic about doubling their investment in the 21-year-old, but an initial offer is likely to fall considerably short.

United are supposedly interested, but the prospects of completing a deal may depend on competition from elsewhere. Paris Saint-Germain are also understood to be in the running, potentially enabling the former Southampton star to reunite with compatriots Joao Neves and Vitinha.

With two new additions in midfield, coupled with Kobbie Mainoo's revival under Carrick, the signs may be ominous for Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan has struggled to settle at Old Trafford and appears further from a regular starting spot than ever before.

When he arrived for an initial £42m in 2024, it seemed then-boss Erik ten Hag might have discovered the holding midfielder he craved. A tally of fewer than 1,000 Premier League minutes last term suggests his destiny lies away from the club.
