Ryan Reynolds has explained why he is “completely gutted” after Wrexham narrowly missed out on a spot in the Championship play-off spots. Saturday saw the final day of the regular season, where Wrexham had the chance to finish in the play-offs and compete for promotion to the Premier League .

However, the Welsh club were forced to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw at home to Middlesbrough, which saw them finish narrowly outside the play-offs spots.

Boro took the lead with a goal from Tommy Conway, before Wrexham equalised with a strike from Josh Windass.

Sam Smith then gave Wrexham the lead just before the half-time break, only for Middlesbrough to equalise with a goal from David Strelec to see the points shared.

The result means that Wrexham finish in seventh place in the Championship in their first season following promotion from League One, just two points behind sixth-placed Hull City , who secured the final play-off spot.

Reynolds, who co-owns Wrexham alongside fellow actor Rob McElhenney , took to social media to express his disappointment at the club not securing a spot in the play-offs, missing out on a chance at promotion to the Premier League as a result.

“I am completely gutted by today’s result but incredibly proud of our season,” Reynolds wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter .

“We’ve come a long way in five years and this was the best result in our 150+ year history. More to do. But for now, we have so much to be proud of, Reds.”

This is the first time since Reynolds and McElhenney’s second season as Wrexham owners that the club has failed to secure promotion at the end of the campaign.

The duo completed a takeover of the club in February 2021 when Wrexham were in the National League, and went on to finish eighth at the end of that season.

The following year resulted in Wrexham finishing second and subsequently losing to Grimsby Town in the play-offs.

Since then, Wrexham have enjoyed three consecutive promotions since the 2022/23 season, which has seen the club climb from the National League up to the Championship.

Reynolds, McElhenney and Co. will now be hoping to embark on another promotion push in the Championship next season, and will begin their preparations for the campaign with fixtures against Liverpool , Leeds United and Sunderland in the United States during pre-season.
