A pivotal clash in the Champions League race takes place under the lights at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night as Chelsea host Manchester United in the Premier League. United won the reverse fixture 2-1 at Old Trafford in September and now have the chance to complete a league double over Chelsea for only the second time, having last done so in 2019-20.

Liam Rosenior’s reign at Stamford Bridge began impressively with four straight Premier League wins, but form has since nosedived. Chelsea have managed just one victory from their last seven league games (D2 L4) — a run bettered only by Tottenham for points gained. Across all competitions, their slump is even starker: since the start of March, no side in Europe’s top five leagues has lost more matches than Chelsea, with six defeats in nine.

Last weekend’s 3-0 home loss to title-chasing Manchester City further damaged Chelsea’s top-four hopes. The Blues are sixth with six games left, but the table is tightening around them — only three points separate them from 11th-placed Bournemouth, while fifth-placed Liverpool are four points ahead.

An FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley is on the horizon, but Chelsea first need to stop the slide in the league. They are trying to avoid a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat for only the second time this century, something they last suffered in May 2023 under Frank Lampard. They have not lost four straight league games without scoring since February/March 1998 — a run that included a home defeat to Manchester United.

Chelsea can at least lean on a strong Stamford Bridge record in this fixture, losing only one of their last 12 home Premier League meetings with United (W6 D5). They also have the chance to record three successive home league wins over the Red Devils for the first time since April 2006.

United arrive after a rare setback. Following a 24-day break, they lost 2-1 at Old Trafford to relegation-threatened Leeds on Monday — their first home defeat under interim boss Michael Carrick — as Leeds claimed a first top-flight win there in 45 years. Leeds dominated the first half, and although Lisandro Martínez’s second-half red card oddly sparked United into life, they could not complete a turnaround with Sir Jim Ratcliffe watching on.

Despite that loss, United remain third, level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa. However, defeat on Saturday would leave them only four points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea and three clear of fifth-placed Liverpool with five matches to play.

Their recent league form has wobbled too: two defeats in their last four matches equals their total from the previous 22, and they risk losing back-to-back league games for the first time this season — something only leaders Arsenal have also avoided so far. Tightening up at the back will be crucial, with United managing just three clean sheets in 13 league games since the start of the year, and only one shutout in their last 21 away matches.
