Chelsea's recent transfer embargo for violating Premier League rules under the previous ownership looks set to come back and haunt BlueCo and Todd Boehly. The Blues have been slapped with a hefty £10.75m fine and are prohibited from signing academy players from Premier League and EFL clubs.

The ban, enforced for nine months, encompasses players of all age groups above the initial under-9s level but is restricted to just players at other Premier League or EFL clubs. This means that Chelsea will be unable to carry out revenge against Liverpool following Rio Ngumoha's switch from Stamford Bridge to Liverpool .

The Blues were keen to retain the emerging talent at the club and made several contract offers to the then 15-year-old, who relocated to Anfield in the summer of 2024.

The Reds forked out an initial £2.8million, which could escalate to £4million after a Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC) tribunal reached a decision earlier this year. Under the current ownership, Chelsea have made a determined push to invest in their youth setup but were irked to lose Ngumoha to a Premier League rival.

The Blues have been seeking retribution for the Ngumoha episode, with Liverpool prodigy Joshua Abe rumoured to be on the move to Stamford Bridge. The Reds winger has yet to finalise scholarship terms with Liverpool, and Chelsea had been tipped to swoop in and snatch the starlet from right under their noses.

However, the recent ban on academy signings, which takes effect straight away, will prevent that transfer from happening given the winger is only 15 years old.

Nevertheless, Chelsea will still be permitted to recruit talent from overseas, which is a significant advantage in their potential pursuits of emerging stars Rayane Messi and Barcelona prodigy Dro Fernandez.

Messi is presently with the Blues' sister club Strasbourg – on loan with Saudi Arabian outfit Neom – and reports suggest Chelsea want to accelerate the youngster into their first team next season amid interest from PSG , Bayern Munich and others.

The Blues were handed a suspended Premier League transfer ban on first-team activity, following the club self-reporting financial irregularities under the previous ownership regime.

The same applies to Fernandez - with both players over the age of 18 and able to move in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
