Manchester United vs Leeds United Premier League preview, team news and prediction

After a 24-day layoff, Manchester United return to Premier League action on Monday night, hosting Leeds United at Old Trafford. United are third in the table, seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea, while Leeds sit 15th, three points above the relegation zone.
A combination of the international break, United’s lack of European football and an early FA Cup exit has left the Red Devils without a match since their 2-2 draw away to Bournemouth on March 20. They spent time training in the Republic of Ireland last week to sharpen up for this fixture, and it will be interesting to see how quickly they find their rhythm after such a lengthy pause.
United remain well placed to secure Champions League qualification for 2026-27. Under interim boss Michael Carrick, they have taken seven wins, two draws and one defeat from 10 games, leaving the 44-year-old strongly positioned to land the job permanently.
The hosts also have history on their side: they are unbeaten in their last 18 home league matches against Leeds and have lost just one of the last 20 league meetings between the sides, winning 12 of those encounters.
Leeds, however, have proved awkward opponents at times recently, avoiding defeat in two of the last three clashes — drawing 2-2 at Old Trafford in February 2023 and 1-1 at Elland Road earlier this season.
Daniel Farke’s team are deep in a relegation fight, with a record of seven wins, 12 draws and 12 defeats from 31 matches. They are also FA Cup semi-finalists after beating West Ham on penalties in last weekend’s quarter-final, and will face Chelsea at Wembley on April 26 for a place in the final.
In the league, Leeds have drawn their last two against Crystal Palace and Brentford and have not won since beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 in early February. Their away form has been a major concern: just one win from 15 away league games, with seven defeats and 28 goals conceded.

Manchester United are without Matthijs de Ligt (back), Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) and suspended Harry Maguire, but Lisandro Martinez is fit again. Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko are available despite withdrawing from international duty, with Sesko a possible starter up front, while Amad Diallo could make the bench. Martinez is expected to partner Leny Yoro, with Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo set to start in midfield.
Leeds will miss Anton Stach and Joe Rodon (both ankle) plus Daniel James (groin). Noah Okafor (back), Jaka Bijol (groin) and Gabriel Gudmundsson (groin) need late fitness tests. Ao Tanaka could be promoted to the XI, with Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in line to return.
