With Manchester United flying high, supporters can hardly be blamed for wanting to savour the moment. But as the summer transfer window starts pulling into view, attention will inevitably start drifting towards what comes next.

Last summer saw a significant overhaul of the front line, with Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arriving in deals totalling just over £180million . The season before, the focus was on the defence, as Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui were added for a combined sum of around £130m.

This time around, the focus appears to be on midfield reinforcements, with Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton among the names being closely monitored. With Casemiro leaving this summer and the futures of Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount and - for now - Kobbie Mainoo still unclear, strengthening in the centre of the park looks a priority.

That said, additions in other areas shouldn't be ruled out either as Sir Jim Ratcliffe's squad rebuild enters its third phase. With that in mind, here are the latest Manchester United headlines.

Manchester United's pursuit of Elliot Anderson may already have hit a stumbling block, with England legend Chris Waddle suggesting the midfielder would favour a return to Newcastle over a switch to Old Trafford.

Anderson joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle in 2024 in a £35m deal at a time when the Magpies were under pressure to balance the books and comply with PSR regulations. It brought an end to a 14-year association with his boyhood club, having first joined as a schoolboy.

According to Waddle, however, the pull of a return to Tyneside could prove decisive if the opportunity arises. "Elliot Anderson is a Newcastle fan. He's a Geordie... he won't be in a rush but the chance of going back to Newcastle? I'm sure he's always wanted to play in those black and white stripes and I'm sure he'll be up for it," Waddle, himself a Geordie former Newcastle star, said.

"But I think, again, there'll be a lot of competition. There'll be a lot of teams eyeing him up so you'd have a lot to pick from if he does decide to leave Forest. Newcastle may just swing it because he's a Newcastle fan."

Forest, for their part, are expected to demand a fee in excess of £100m in an effort to ward off interest. But given the 23-year-old's emergence as one of the Premier League's - and England's - most reliable and consistent midfielders this season, it would be no surprise if that valuation still attracts serious attention.

Manchester United are preparing for another busy summer, with plans in place to make four key additions. According to the Manchester Evening News , the club are targeting two midfielders, a left back and a left-sided forward as part of the next phase of their rebuild.

Anderson is their No. 1 target in midfield but Adam Wharton is also high on their wish list, as is Brighton's Carlos Baleba, who was targeted by United last summer. Newcastle pair Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are also being considered .

At left back, Myles Lewis-Skelly has emerged as a prominent target . The England youngster has slipped out of Arsenal's first-team picture this season and is viewed internally as a potential long-term successor to Luke Shaw .

Further forward, United are keen to recruit a player capable of providing both width and a goal threat. RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande is among those being monitored, alongside Everton's Iliman Ndiaye.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
