Liam Rosenior insists he has support of Chelsea’s owners despite alarming slump

Liam Rosenior insists he retains the full backing of Chelsea’s ownership, despite the club’s faltering Champions League qualification bid and growing fan discontent.

The Blues have endured a torrid run, losing four consecutive league matches without scoring, leaving them seven points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool in the Premier League .

The latest setback, a 1-0 home defeat by Manchester United on Saturday evening, was met with boos at the final whistle, following pre-match street protests by some supporters against owners BlueCo.

However, co-owner Behdad Eghbali publicly affirmed the club’s support for Rosenior last week, expressing optimism for long-term success under his stewardship.

When questioned about this backing, the Chelsea head coach, who took over from Enzo Maresca in January, stated: "One hundred per cent. They have been supportive of me in our daily conversations, they have been magnificent in their support of me and the team.

“We’re aligned that we know we need to win games of football in the now, but that doesn’t go against what we’re trying to do, which is give consistent success to this club long-term."

Chelsea will aim to arrest their alarming slump when they travel to ninth-placed Brighton on Tuesday evening.

With only three points separating them from Fulham in 12th, Rosenior’s side face the very real prospect of missing out on European football entirely.

Reflecting on their Champions League aspirations, Rosenior admitted: "We’ve made it very difficult for ourselves. We have to be honest and realistic with that. But what we can’t do is give up. We have to keep fighting.

“We have to make sure we go to Brighton with similar attributes to what I saw against Manchester United in terms of our energy, our intensity and engagement to the game, which was good.

“But we didn’t keep a clean sheet and we didn’t take advantage of the chances, so we need to be more clinical and more ruthless in both boxes."
