Leeds address crowd reaction after brief Ramadan stoppage

Leeds United criticized sections of their fans after boos were heard during a short Ramadan break in Premier League game against Manchester City .

Leeds United expressed strong disappointment after some supporters booed during a pause in play to allow Muslim players to break their Ramadan fast.

The incident took place during Premier League match against Manchester City on Saturday. The referee stopped the game after 13 minute so players observing Ramadan could eat and drink at sunset following league protocol.

Despite the pause lasting around one minute, loud boos were heard from sections of the home crowd while players stood near the touchline.

Leeds United responded shortly after the match with official statement carried by BBC.

The club described the reaction as “disappointing” and confirmed that the incident is now under review. Leeds added that they are looking into possible steps to make sure similar situations do not happen again in the future.

The club stressed that Elland Road should be a place where all players feel respected, regardless of background or belief.

The Premier League allows referees to briefly stop matches at sunset during Ramadan so fasting players can safely break their fast. This protocol has been used regularly in recent seasons and applies to all clubs.

During the Leeds-City match, the reason for the stoppage was also shown on the stadium screens explaining that the pause was linked to Ramadan.

The reaction from the crowd was widely criticized. Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out described the boos as “massively disappointing” saying the incident shows football still needs more education around religion and inclusion.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola also spoke about the issue calling for respect for religion and diversity within football stadiums.
