Javier Mascherano resigns from Inter Miami, latest updates: Reactions and everything we know so far

On Tuesday, a stunning bit of news emerged out of South Florida. Javier Mascherano, who led Inter Miami to its first MLS Cup title in his first season as manager, has resigned from his position, citing "personal reasons".

No one was expecting it, and it came out of nowhere. Although Inter Miami wasn't playing to its best capabilities so far this season, they're still third in the Eastern Conference. Now, Inter Miami must turn its attention to finding a replacement for Mascherano. For now, Lionel Messi and co. will have an interim manager.

A stunner! In just his second season at the helm, Mascherano has called it quits.

Javier Mascherano has had his fair share of critics since he began his coaching career. His stint as manager of Argentina's national youth teams was disappointing, to say the least, but he quickly found success at Inter Miami.

With help from Lionel Messi, Mascherano guided Inter Miami to its first-ever MLS Cup trophy in 2025, doing so in his first season as manager. There were doubts about how far the team could go in the playoffs, particularly due to a struggling defensive unit. But Mascherano had the magic touch in the postseason, with Mateo Silvetti and Tadeo Allende playing massive roles.

It seemed like Mascherano had figured things out ahead of the 2026 MLS season, but Inter Miami hasn't gelled perfectly with all of its new signings to this point. With a 3-3-1 record, Mascherano and the players know they should be playing better. Perhaps that's why Mascherano resigned, but we won't know until the full details come out.
