Jamie Carragher's Mohamed Salah prediction comes true after vow to skip Liverpool farewell

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher's predictions have been vindicated regarding Mohamed Salah 's future. That's after previous remarks resurfaced showing the Anfield icon was well ahead of the game in anticipating Salah's summer departure.

It was recently confirmed that Reds icon Salah will waive the final year of his contract and part ways with Liverpool at the end of this campaign. He'll depart as one of the most legendary figures in Premier League history, though that's not enough to get some emotional about his send-off.

That's because Carragher's hoping that when the Premier League season draws to a close, Arne Slot's team will still be competing for Champions League glory. And the former defender seemed fairly certain a second European trophy would be the crowning achievement in Salah's legacy.

Speaking on Monday Night Football in December, Carragher predicted: "I don't see Mo Salah playing for Liverpool next season. The big thing in my mind is [what] are we going to see from now until the end of the season?"

At the time of those remarks, Salah's future remained uncertain after he launched a public attack on the club . The Egyptian, who was preparing to link up with his national team for the Africa Cup of Nations, was among several underperforming Liverpool stars and had his dedication questioned.

Salah claimed he had been "thrown under the bus" after being left out by boss Slot for a number of matches. Liverpool were enduring a worryingly poor spell of results at the time, prompting Salah to hint he was being made a scapegoat amid speculation over his Anfield future.

Carragher was among those who slammed the forward's conduct following his outburst after a 3-3 stalemate with Leeds. He has since come to the defence of the club icon, though, and tipped him to lead the side to Champions League glory despite their difficulties elsewhere.

"The timing of Tuesday's announcement strikes me as both perfect and clever," he wrote for The Telegraph . "There will, inevitably, be retrospective suggestions that the decision is a year too late, and that it would have been better for all parties had he sought his farewell when the club won the Premier League trophy last May."

Carragher went on to say that by announcing his departure in advance, Salah "guarantees the kind of emotional, grand farewell" he deserves. Yet he added that he wouldn't be taking part in the Anfield celebrations, because there was still something far more significant left to compete for.

"I have one final admission, however," Carragher continued. "While I will celebrate his career, I have no wish to be part of a grand Anfield farewell after the club's final Premier League fixture in May. Every Liverpool fan has something far better and more dramatic in mind.

"Knowing Salah's mindset and competitive spirit, he will be setting his sights on the greatest of all possible goodbyes a week later: inspiring his team to victory in the Champions League final in Budapest. Do not bet against the perfect send-off."
