Former Manchester City star Yaya Toure has outlined why Michael Carrick has demonstrated his credentials to be handed the Manchester United manager's job on a permanent basis. Carrick was appointed by the Red Devils as their interim boss until the end of the campaign back in January and has overseen a successful spell in charge.
Carrick has steered United up to third spot in the Premier League standings and they are in a strong position in the battle to secure Champions League football. United secured a 1-0 triumph over Chelsea on Saturday evening in the Premier League courtesy of a first-half strike from Matheus Cunha, a victory which saw them stretch their advantage in the Champions League spots to 10 points with five games remaining.
Speculation persists about who might become United's full-time manager, with the impact made by Carrick sparking suggestions that the 44-year-old could land the role on a permanent basis. Former City midfielder Toure frequently went head-to-head with Carrick during their respective playing careers in the Manchester derby
The former Ivory Coast international was present at Stamford Bridge to watch United's victory over Chelsea, and has offered his thoughts on Carrick being handed a permanent role by the Old Trafford hierarchy. "Good to be back at Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea v Manchester United," Toure posted on X, formerly known as Twitter .
"I was watching with added interest as two young coaches I like and admire went head to head. Michael Carrick is doing so so well at Manchester United and has to be in with a very good chance of having the manager job permanently.

"In football we rightly talk lots about tactics, shape and systems. But I love how Michael has got the basics right.
"He's got players in their best positions and has his team enjoying their football again. He says they will play better in the future. I believe him."
United have five matches remaining in the Premier League as they bid to secure a spot in next season's Champions League. Carrick and his side face Brentford in their next outing on April 27, before rounding off the campaign with clashes against Liverpool , Sunderland , Nottingham Forest and Brighton .
Carrick said: "That was massive, that was a big win for us. They had some opportunities but to keep a clean sheet and defend like we did, there was a lot of work that had to go into the last day or so in terms of prepping the team with a new back four."
