Early blow for Carrick as player who’s started every league fixture this season suffers game-ending injury

Luke Shaw has been withdrawn inside half an hour against Crystal Palace after suffering an injury setback.

The defender has been replaced by Noussair Mazraoui at Old Trafford, with Manchester United trailing 1-0 following an early Crystal Palace opener.

Shaw went down to receive treatment before being taken off. He was able to walk himself off of the pitch, and there is a chance Michael Carrick may just be proceeding with caution, given the player’s disastrous injury record in recent years.

The 30-year-old has, surprisingly, been available to start every Premier League match so far this campaign, and has accumulated 2,363 minutes of playing time.

Either way, Mazraoui is a like-for-like change, so you wouldn’t expect Shaw’s departure to necessarily weaken Carrick’s XI.

Improvements are necessary in M16, however, as it’s been a flat half-hour of action from the home side.

Palace have been in fluctuating form heading into the clash, whereas United have won five of their last six matches, including unexpected triumphs over Arsenal and Manchester City – the top two in the division.

Claiming all three points against the Eagles would see the Reds move up to third in the aftermath of Aston Villa’s shock 2-0 defeat to rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night.

It’s also a short turnaround before Carrick’s men are back in action again; they face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Wednesday evening in an 8.15pm kick-off.
