Royal Blue meets Sky Blue at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as Champions League-chasing Chelsea welcome Manchester City, who remain on the fringes of the title race, for a Premier League heavyweight clash in the capital.

Both sides returned from the international break in emphatic fashion in the FA Cup. Chelsea, under Liam Rosenior, thrashed Port Vale 7-0, while Pep Guardiola’s City ripped Liverpool apart 4-0.

For Rosenior, the visit of obliging League One opposition came at the perfect time. Chelsea had gone into the break on a damaging run of four straight defeats, increasing scrutiny on the manager’s long-term prospects. But even without Enzo Fernandez, the Blues ran riot to book a favourable Wembley semi-final against Leeds United in late April.

The scoreline has not eased the pressure significantly, though, particularly in the wake of the Fernandez-Real Madrid controversy. The midfielder will again be absent this weekend, serving the second match of an internal two-game ban.

Chelsea received a boost in midweek thanks to Arsenal, whose Champions League win over Sporting Lisbon confirmed that English clubs will have five UCL places next season. Even so, the Blues sit sixth in the league — one point outside the coveted positions — and their recent domestic form remains a concern. After losses to Newcastle United and Everton without scoring, they risk an unwanted first this century: Chelsea have not lost three consecutive Premier League matches without finding the net since 1998.

City, by contrast, arrive targeting a third straight win and a third successive clean sheet, buoyed by two statement victories in cup competition. Their 2-0 League Cup final win over Arsenal — inspired by Nico O’Reilly — made Guardiola the first manager to lift the trophy five times, ensuring at least one piece of silverware this season if it does prove to be his last.

They followed that Wembley success by dismantling Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals, with Erling Haaland’s 12th City hat-trick since 2022 playing a central role. While City trail leaders Arsenal by nine points, that gap comes with the important caveat of a game in hand, and the sides meet at the Etihad next weekend. On current form, Guardiola’s team will back themselves to keep applying pressure.

With the season entering its final stretch, City’s late-season pedigree keeps the title race alive — particularly in April, where they have won 28 of their last 31 Premier League matches.

Chelsea did manage a 1-1 draw at the Etihad in January, but even that result extended City’s unbeaten run against the Blues to 12 matches in all competitions. Chelsea have not beaten them since the 2020-21 Champions League final.

Rosenior says Fernandez’s relationship with him and the club remains good, but the midfielder will still miss Sunday’s visit of Manchester City.

Chelsea’s injury list is unchanged — Reece James, Levi Colwill, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Filip Jorgensen and Trevoh Chalobah remain out — though Benoit Badiashile could return after illness. With limited rotation options, Rosenior is expected to keep changes to a minimum, but Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella should come back in.

City’s issues are mainly in defence: Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol are still sidelined, while John Stones is a doubt after a calf problem. Bernardo Silva will become the Premier League’s most-capped Portuguese player (297) if he plays.
